Abstract
1305170 Disposable umbrellas NAKANIHON SANGO CO Ltd 29 Dec 1971 [30 Dec 1970 4 May 1971(3)] 60301/71 Heading A4P A disposable umbrella comprises ribs 10, a cover 14, a hollow stick 1, a handle 17, a slider 3 having parts (6), Fig.3 (not shown), receiving the inner ends of the ribs, the ribs being substantially normal to the stick axis when the umbrella is open and means being provided to retain the umbrella in the open position. The cover is attached to the stick by engagement between a cap 16 and a member 2 having hooks 2b to which are attached elastic strings also attached to the outer ends, or intermediate points, on the ribs to urge the ribs upwardly until strings 8 become taut. The cover is attached to the ribs between pieces (13), Fig. 5 (not shown) on the rib outer ends and inserts 15 received in the pieces (13). The umbrella is retained open by an elastic string 19 extending between a hook 18a of handle 17 and a projection 5 sliding in a slit in the stick 1, which is of square crosssection. The umbrella is retained closed by engagement of the rib outer ends in a slidable ring 22. Sideways movement of the ribs is restricted by abutments (12), Fig. 3 (not shown) on the slider 3 between adjacent parts (6). In a modification, the strings 21 are omitted. In a second embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the slider is almost as long as the stick 1 and the umbrella is retained open by engagement between a catch on the lower end of the slider, or on the handle, and a projection on the handle, or on the lower end of the slider respectively. In a third embodiment, Figs.8 and 9 (not shown), the umbrella is retained open by engagement of a ball (46) in a hollow (45) in the lower end of the handle, the ball (46) being connected to an inward projection (5) of the slider by a string (47) and to a pull ring (49). When the umbrella is open, the lower part of the string (47) passes through a slot (44) in the handle, and to close the umbrella the ring (49) is pulled to pass the ball (46) from hollow (45) into a through-bore (43) of the handle, the bore (43) communicating with the slot (44), the umbrella then being automatically closed by means of an elastic string (50) extending between the projection (5) and a cap (40) attaching the cover to the shaft. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the strings 8 are omitted and abutments (12) between adjacent parts (6) on the slider supporting the rib inner ends allow substantially no sideways movement of the ribs 10 when the umbrella is open with the ribs normal to the stick-axis, which position is defined when shoulders on the parts (6) substantially abut the slider 3. The cover 14 may be made of vinyl plastics, and the stick, handle, slider and the pieces (13) may be made of synthetic resin.
