1357014 Garden umbrellas BREMSHEY AG 14 Oct 1971 47951/71 Heading A4P A garden umbrella comprises a shaft 2, Fig. 1, a crown 11, canopy support spokes 15, struts 4, and a remote control lever 23 connected to spokes 15 via a tension element 27, the lever having at one end a slider (22), Figs. 4 to 6, (not shown) slidable along a guide slot 20 in a member 18, the umbrella being opened by sliding lever 23 downwards, without pivoting, from the position of Fig. 1, until the slider (22) reaches the bottom of the slot 20 and the spokes 15 are extended, the frame being locked open by subsequent pivoting lever 23 about an axis adjacent said one end into a position in which the slider (22) is prevented from sliding up the slot 20, the element 27 being connected to the lever 23 at a position offset from the pivotal axis and so that when the lever is pivoted to its locking position the reaction from element 27 passes through said axis to provide an over-centre effect and hold the lever in the locked position. During such pivoting the slider (22), which is elongate, rotates in an aperture 21 at the bottom of slot 20 to a position in which the slider is out of alignment with slot 20. A handle 24 of lever 23 has one surface (24"), Figs. 4-6, (not shown) engaging shaft 2 when the umbrella is closed and during sliding of lever 23, and an opposed surface (24') engaging shaft 2 in the open, locked position of lever 23 to prevent further pivoting thereof. The crown is coupled to element 27, which may be a cord, rod or lever, by a crown carrier 12 telescoping into shaft 2. Struts 4 are integral with a collar 3, Fig. 10, fixed on shaft 2, the hinge joints 5 being formed by transverse slits 6. These joints may be supported when the umbrella is open by curved ends of ribs 35 and by a collar 36 on a distance piece 37 engaging between crown 11 and collar 3. The collar 3 may be slidable along shaft 2 and the piece 37 is then fixed thereon to limit such sliding. The spokes 15 are hinged to crown 11 by struts 9 integral therewith and having hinge joints 13 slotted at 14 and supported by cheeks 34 on the crown in the open position of the umbrella.
