1452201 Umbrellas BREMSHEY AG 18 Feb 1974 [16 Feb 1973 29 March 1973] 7248/74 Heading A4P An umbrella comprises a shortenable stick 1, a plurality of three-part ribs 8 extending from a crown 7 and each of which is shortenable when the frame is closed by the middle rib part 8b telescoping into the inner rib part 8a and the outer rib part 8c pivoting upwardly about a pivotal connection 11 between rib parts 8b and 8c, a plurality of pivotal main struts 13 inter-connecting a main slider 12 and the middle rib parts, a plurality of pivotal auxiliary struts 19 inter-connecting the main struts and an auxiliary slider 18, and a plurality of struts 14 controlling the folding and opening of rib parts 8c each of which extends substantially parallel to a corresponding middle rib part and is connected at one end to a corresponding main strut and at the other end to an extension 16 of the outer rib part inwardly of the pivotal connection 11. The control strut 14 is connected with extension 16 which is of U-section, by a hinge pin 17 which engages in slots 21 in the arms 22 of the extension, the slots providing a lost motion in the plane of folding of the outer rib part. In the open position of the frame the end of strut 14 engages the middle rib part 8b. In a modification, Fig. 7, the slots 21 extend at an acute angle to the rib part 8c and the length of the strut is less than the distance between the hinge pins 9, 11. The crown 7 may be circular oval or rectangular in section. The stick 1 may comprise a circular tube piece 2 and tube pieces 3, 4 of hexagonal section. One of the auxiliary struts may have an opening assister 28 a pawl head of which co-operates with a catch opening in the stick 1.
