Abstract

1412639 Umbrella tents A FULTON 23 Nov 1973 [30 Sept 1972] 43575/72 Heading E1A [Also in Division A4] A frame for an umbrella, tent or parasol comprises a plurality of ribs Having inner parts 4, Fig. 8, pivoted to a carrier 2 on a stem 1, and outer parts 5 pivoted to the inner parts 4, struts 7 pivoted to the rib parts 4 and to a runner 3, the parts 4 lying substantially parallel with the stem 1 in the closed position of the frame with the parts 5 folded onto the parts 4, and each outer rib part 5 having a flexible substantially non- extensible member 8 (Fig. 2) or 12 (Fig. 8) secured at its one end to the inner end of the part 5 and constrained to the rib part 4 for part of its length near said one end and anchored at its other end below the rib carrier 2 whereby on opening the frame as the inner rib parts swing up and out the members pull the outer rib parts about their pivots until rib parts 4 and 5 are substantially colinear and on closing the frame as the inner rib parts swing down the members 8 push the outer rib parts upwardly about their pivots. The members 8, 12 may be wires. The other ends of wires 8 may be fixed to a collar on the stem with their one ends fixed to ends 10, Fig. 2, of rib parts 5, the inner ends of parts 5 sliding in sleeves 9 pivoted at 6 to parts 4 whereby during opening parts 4, 5 are first brought into line and then wires 8 pull parts 5 until ends 10 abut collars 8d thereby bowing the ribs upwardly to tension the cover. Alternatively the one ends of wires 12 are attached at 7c, Fig. 8, to struts 7, the other ends of wires 12 being secured between cheeks (13a, Fig. 9) of members 13 axially slidable during the final opening movement in slides 14 to bow the ribs, the slides 14 and rib parts 5 being pivoted at 6 to the rib parts 4. Parts 4, 5 may be of plastics with integral hinges. THE RUNNER 3 comprises an upper part having an anchor portion 3a for struts 7 and carrying a pawl 15 pivoted at 16 and acted on by spring 17 to engage nose 15a in a cut-out in stem 1 when the frame is open, the nose 15a being released by pulling a lower runner part downwardly to cause a pin 18 to engage and withdraw nose 15a. The runner is outside the frame when closed and a recess therein receives part of a handle attached to a lower stem part 1a telescopically engaged with an upper stem part.
