Abstract

1346365 Automatically opening umbrellas IDEAL KK 26 Oct 1971 [1 April 1971 16 April 1971] 49577/71 Heading A4P An automatically opening umbrella comprises a hollow shaft 1, ribs 3 pivoted to a notch 2 fixed to shaft 1, struts 5 pivoted to slider 4, auxiliary struts 7 pivoted to a slider 6 and having their outer ends pivoted to struts 5 and ribs 3, and an opening spring 9 located in the shaft. The lower end of spring 9 is pushed against a guide pin 10 through slider 4, pin 10 running in slots 11, (12), Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), through a tube 2a joined to notch 2 and through shaft 1 respectively. Slider 4 strikes an elastic body 14, on a washer 13 fixed on tube 2a, when the umbrella reaches the fully-open position. A catch 18 is urged by a spring into a hole 20 in slider 6 to retain the umbrella in the closed position, catch 18 being released by a button 19. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 5-8 (not shown), a pin (34) through slider 4 slides in slots (35), (36) respectively in the shaft 1 and in a tube (31) immovably fixed in the shaft. The pin (34) supports a rod (37) in shaft 1, an opening spring (33) surrounding rod (37) and having a lower end supported by an enlarged lower part (37a) of rod (37) and an upper end abutting against the lower end of the tube (31). As the umbrella reaches the fully-open position the slider 6 abuts against a shock-absorbing spring (38) supported by and below slider 4.
