1346841 Automatic opening and closing umbrellas IDEAL K K 19 April 1971 (21 April 1970] 9943/71 Heading A4P An automatically opening and closing umbrella comprises a main shaft member 1 slideable over upper 2 lower 4 and intermediate 3 inner shaft members, a ring 6 fixed to member 2 and pivotally mounting ribs 5 and tension spring devices 7, 8 for closing the umbrella, a ring 12 fixed to the member 1 by a pin 11 passing through slots 13 in member 2 and pivotally mounting spokes each having telescopic parts 14, 14a, a slider 18 pivotally mounting rods 19 and connected by a pin 16 passing through slots 17 in member 1 to member 3, a slider 34, slideable on member 1 and pivotally carrying spokes 33 a compression spring 10 for opening the umbrella mounted around a guide rod assembly between members 3 and 4, a latch 35 for locking slider 34 to member 1, and a latch 37 for locking member 1 to member 4. The guide rod assembly comprises a rod 23 fixed to core members 20, 27 movably attached to members 3 and 4 respectively by pins 22, 29 fixed to members 3 and 4 respectively and slideable in slots 21, 30 in members 20, 27 respectively. The lower end of member 4 is fixed to a handle 9. When the umbrella is closed a sleeve joined to slider 34 covers an operating button 37b of latch 37 a claw 37a engaging in a hole 1b in member 1 to lock member 1 to member 4. To open the umbrella a tip cup 39 is removed from the ends of ribs 5 and latch 35 operated to release end 36 thereof from a hole 1a in member 1 allowing spring 10 to lift member 3 relative to member 1, pin 22 moving in the slot 21 in member 20 until it hits the upper ends thereof. Members 3 and 20 slider 18 guide rod 23 and member 27 then move upwardly together until finally pin 29 hits the lower end of slot 30. Upward movement of slider 18 spreads rods 19 and thus spokes 14, 14a and ribs 5 and when the upper end of member 3 hits the lower end of member 2 ring 6 is moved away from ring 12. The spreading of ribs 5 pulls slider 34 upwards and extends tension springs 7. To close the umbrella latch 37 is operated to unlock members 1 and 4, springs 7 then urging ribs 5 closed and pulling member 1 up relative to members 4 and 2 so that rings 6 and 12 move towards each other, spokes 14, 14a closing and pushing slider 18 down. Closing of ribs 5 causes a downward movement of slider 34 until the umbrella is closed with latch 35 engaged in a hole 1a but with spring 10 extended. To prepare the umbrella for opening member 4 is moved upwards relative to member 1 to compress spring 10 until latch 37 engages in hole 1b to lock members 1 and 4 together.
