Abstract

752,455. Telescopic umbrellas. KOCH, B. Aug. 18, 1953 [Oct. 25, 1952], No. 22802/53. Class 134. The end of the stick of an umbrella comprising telescopic stick and rib sections carries a flange with a rim extending towards the notch member, the rim being axially movable relative to the stick and disposed to engage and secure the ends of the ribs in the collapsed position of the umbrella and to pull out the ribs when extending the stick. The umbrella shown comprises a stick consisting of telescopic tubular sections 3, each having at one end a conical head 5, Fig. 3, separated by an annular recess from an integral head 4, and near the opposite end two spring tongues 7 formed between two longitudinal slots 6 and a transverse slot 8, the conical head 5 of one section engaging the slot 8 of the adjacent section to lock the stick sections in the extended position. The ribs comprise telescopic tubular sections 17 and 20, the latter being provided with a hook 18 which is retained in a radial slot 15 in the top notch 14 by a ring 19. A lug 21 attached to the inner rib section 17 and projecting through a slot in the section 20 is attached by means of a stretcher 22 to the slide 2. The remaining rib sections 17 are provided with conical heads and slots as shown in Fig. 3. The cover is clamped between an open cap 26, secured to the top notch 14, and a ferrule 24, the outer edge being attached to projections 29 on the outer rib sections 17. A flange 11 is secured by a hollow screw 12 to the end of the innermost stick section 3, the flange having an annular rim 13 with an inwardly projecting lip 13a which engages over the heads 9 on the ends of the outer rib sections 17. The flange 11 is in two parts 11a and 11b, the part 11a having a solid central plate 27a secured to the screw 12. The rim 13 is secured round the periphery of the part 11b which is secured at its centre to a pin 30 slidably retained in the screw 12 and having a head 31. A resilient plate 28 is secured at its centre to the pin 30 and at its periphery to the periphery of the part 11a. To collapse the umbrella the slide 2 is pulled down until the ribs are alongside the stick, the rips and stick still being extended. The head 31 is pulled downwardly flexing the plate 28 and the heads 9 on the ribs are pressed towards the stick to be within the rim 13 which on release of the head 31 will engage round the heads 9. The flange 11 is then forced towards the notch member 14 so that the conical heads 5 on the stick and rib sections are forced out of the slots 8, and the stick and rib sections are finally disposed in the fully collapsed position shown. The umbrella is opened in the opposite manner. A handle may be arranged on the flange 11.
