Abstract

12,062. Eklund, I. May 15. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Telescopic umbrellas; opening; covers.- A collapsible umbrella of the telescopic rib and stick type comprises inner and outer rib sections 11, 57, Fig. 6, provided respectively with guiding-members 55, 59 to enable the outer sections to slide within the inner sections. Spring catches 58 engage the inturned flanges 56 of the members 55 to secure the rib sections together when in the extended position, being released therefrom by means of springs 65 on the stretchers 45 only when the ribs are squeezed firmly against the stick prior to collapsing the umbrella. Normally, the springs 65 press against the members 59 and prevent the release of the catches 58. The springs 65 may be of spring wire instead of bent clock spring as shown in Fig. 6, and, in a modification, are supplemented by rigid members on the stretchers' arranged to strike the catches 58 when pressure is applied. Fig. 9 shows one of the members 59 having ears 63 bent around the inner rib sections 11, ears 64 for the attachment of the stretchers, and ears 61 to which the umbrella cover is sewn. Sticks. - The stick comprises telescopic sections 5, 8, 9, and a tip 37, Figs. 2 and 3, made of hollow tubing, preferably hexagonal in section. The sections 5, 8 are provided with openings 24, into which snap spring clogs 12, Fig. 4, on the inner ends of the sections 8, 9 when the stick is extended. The tip 37, Fig. 3, is linked by a hooked wire 34 to a sleeve 22 having a limited sliding movement (a pin 23" engaging in slots 23, Fig. 4) within the section 9, and may be telescoped into the section 9 after pressing in the catch 40. When so telescoped, the consequent movement of the sleeve 22 disengages the dog 12 in the section 9 by the action of the sleeve upon the inclined shoulder 18 and allows the telescoping of the section 9 in the section 8. The section 9 in turn similarly releases the dog at the inner end of the section 8 engaging the section 5, and the stick is thus completely collapsed. In a modification, the tip 37 and sleeve 22 are each halved over their engaging portions within the section 9; stops on the ends of these portions limit the inward and outward travel of the tip. Plates 53 and enlargements 54 thereon, Fig. 4, facilitate the travel of the runner over the dogs 12. Holding open and closed; runners.-The runner is held in its upper position by means of a spring catch 25, Fig. 3, having a spring tail 30 and projections 28, 29, and has a slot 46, Fig. 5, for the projection 28, and a slot 47 for the projection 29 and the enlarged end 48 of the lower catch 49, Fig. 2; upward movement of an outer sleeve 50 against a spring 52 releases the catches. Cases.-When collapsed, the umbrella is placeo within a flexible casing provided with a projecting tab for enabling it to be removed readily.
