This invention relates to umbrellas, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind comprising a handle member so constructed and assembled as to provide effective means for housing the umbrella structure proper to protect the same when not in use.

It is also an object of the invention to provide an umbrella with a separable handle member and wherein said handle member comprises a plurality l of telescoping sections which, when extended, are

adapted to receive and house the umbrella structure proper, together with means for releasably holding the sections of the handle member in either extended or compacted adjustment.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind including a handle member so constructed as to house the umbrella structure proper when not in use and wherein the stick of the umbrella structure carries a reversible cap 20 member for detachable engagement with the handle member for locking the umbrella structure within the handle member or for maintaining the umbrella structure of the handle in position for use.

25 The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrange ment of the several parts of my improved umbrella whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less 3 expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

35 In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of an um- 40 brella constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the same being shown ready for use;

Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view taken through the handle member with the 45 umbrella structure proper housed therein;

Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, l denotes the stick of the umbrella structure 50 proper and which has associated therewith in a well known manner the ribs 2 and cover 3. These ribs 2 and cover 3 are adapted to be drawn down closely adjacent to the stick I in the manner now generally in use.

.66 The lower end portion of the stick I is secured,

as at 4, to the axial center of a plate 5 positioned substantially central of a cap member C. This cap member C at opposite sides of the plate 5 is formed to provide the internally threaded sockets 6 and I each of which, as will hereinafter be set 5 forth, is adapted to receive an end portion of the handle member M. This handle member M comprises two elongated tubular sections 8 and 9, the section 9 telescopically engaging within the section B and has its outer end it) closed while its 0 inner end is open. The section 8 is open at both ends and in its central portion is provided therearound with a series of elongated slots H. The outer portion of the section 8 threads into the socket 6 or I.

The sections 8 and 9 are of such length that when extended they will effectively house the folded umbrella structure proper as is illustrated in Figure 2. When the umbrella structure is contained within the member M the outer extremity of the section 8 of the member M is in threaded engagement within the socket 6 of the cap member C.

When it is desired to use the umbrella, the cap C is disengaged from the section 8 of the member M and the outer end portion of the member M is then engaged within the socket 'l of the cap and with the section 9 moved inwardly of the section 8, as is illustrated in Figure 1, a convenient handle is provided for carrying the umbrella.

In the present embodiment of my invention the section 9 is of a length slightly in excess of the section 8 so that when the sections 8 and 9 are compacted the closed end ID of the section 9 will extend slightly beyond the adjacent end of the section 8 to increase the esthetic value of the handle. This, however, is not essential.

The extremity of the stick I engaged with the plate 5 of the cap C has connected thereto, as at I2, a conventional loop I4 while the closed end M of the section 9 at the axial center thereof has secured thereto, as at IS, a snap hook it or the like to provide means whereby the member M with the umbrella structure therein may be conveniently suspended from a suitable support. This is equally true of the loop M.

It is believed to be obvious that when the stick l is secured to the handle member M as illustrated in Figure 1, the loop M will be readily received within the adjacent portions of the compacted sections 8 and 9.

The inner end portion of the section 8 is provided with an opening ll through which is freely disposed the lug I9. This lug I9 is adapted to be received within an opening 20 carried by the outer end portion of the section 9 whereby said sections 8 and 9 are held in compacted adjustment and to engage within an opening 2| at the inner portion of the section 9 to hold the sections 8 and 9 in their extended adjustment. In the present embodiment of the invention the lug I9 is constantly urged inwardly and maintained in eifective position under the action of the spring 22 carried by the section 8. It is believed to be obvious that means other than the lug I9 may be employed for holding the sections 8 and 9 in their several positions.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that an umbrella constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

In an umbrella, a stick, a cap carried by the outer end portion of the stick and having oppositely facing sockets, a handle member comprising telescoping tubular sections, said sections when extended housing the stick and the conventional ribs and cover carried thereby, the outer end portion of one of the sections of the handle member engaging within one of the sockets of the cap, said extremity of the section of the handle member engaging within the second socket of the cap when the stick is Withdrawn and in position for use, the sections of the handle member telescoping when the stick is in said second position, said sections when extended receiving the stick and the conventional umbrella structure carried thereby without collapsing said stick or any of said structure, the inner end portion of the outer tubular section having an opening, and a spring pressed lug freely passing through said opening, the opposite end portions of the inner section having openings to receive said lug when said sections are either extended or contracted to lock said sections against relative movement when in either of said positions.
