IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED UMBRELLAS AND GAMES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,295, dated May 27, 1873; application filed March 29, 1873.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, T. R. LAMBERT GHE- VERS, of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Umbrella and Cane, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 represents my improved device arranged as an umbrella, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same arranged as r a cane. Fig. 3 is an under-side view of apart of the cover.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device which shall be so constructed that it may be readily adjusted for use as an umbrella or a cane, as may be de-" sired, and which, when adjusted for use in either capacity, shall show no indication of any other use. The invention consists in the hollow handle provided with a detachablecap and a detachable ferrule to adapt it I for use as a cane, as hereinafter described and claimed.

A represents the handle, which is made hollow and with one end enlarged to give space to the runners of the umbrella'frame. The larger end of the handle A is closed with a cap, B. The other or smaller end of the handle A has a screw-thread out upon it to screw into a ferrule, 0, when the device is adjusted for use as a cane, and to screw into astationary runner, I). when the device is adjusted as an umbrella, in which case the ferrule 0 is screwed upon a screw-thread cut I upon the end of the said runner D. E are runner D, and has a head formed upon its I end, so that it cannot be drawn through the said runner. The wire H fits intoa groove -or slot in the runner D, so that it may not be in the way of the handle A when screwed into said runner. The wire H projects along the side of the handle A, and has a loop formed upon its end to receive the springhook I attached to the runner Gr, when said runner is slid up upon the handle A in open in g the umbrella. J is an open sleeve placed upon the handle A, and which has small hooks formed upon it at the upper end of its slit to receive the sides of the catch-loop of the wire H and hold 'said loop in proper position to receive the hook I when the umbrella is opened. K is the cover, in the center of which is formed a hole toreceive and fit upon the stationary runner D. To the outer edges of the cover K are attached eyes L to receive the outer ends of, the ribs E, and hook upon hooks formed in the under side of said ends, as shown in Fig. 1. To the cover. K are also attached open-ring springs M, which may be sprung upon and oi the middle part of the ribs E to more securely connect said cover with said ribs.

This construction enables the cover to be readily attached and detached from the umbrella-frame when desired.

To adjust the device for use as a cane the cover K is removed; the ferrule O is unscrewed; the handle A unscrewed and drawn out; the open sleeve J is detached; and the umbrella-frame folded together in the reverse direction. The cap B. is then removed; the folded umbrella-frame inserted in the cavity of handle A the open hook-sleeve J inserted in the runner G; the cap B replaced; and the ferrule G screwed upon the end of the handle B.

By reversing this operation the device is adjusted for use as an umbrella.

A part of one end of the runnerG is beveled off to give space for the hooks of the open sleeve J when inserted in said runner The cover K may be carried in the pocket, or in a traveling-bag or other receptacle, as may be most convenient.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the runners D G, ribs E, braces F, wire H having a head upon one end and a catch-loop upon the other end, the spring-catch hook I, and open book sleeve J with each Other toadapt them for detachable attachment to the handle, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The cover K provided with eyes L and open-ring springs M to adapt it for detachable attachment to the umbrella-frame, substantially as herein shown and described.

3. An umbrella having an end-threaded handle, A, an end-threaded runner, D, and

an internally-threaded ferrule, O, as and for the purpose specified.
