UMBRELLA OR PARASOL SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,308, dated April 11, 1882.

. To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JosEPH Fons'rnn, en gineer, a citizen of Austria, residing atVienna, in the Or'ownland of Nether-Austria and State of Austria Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas and Parasols, (Sunshades and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

. The umbrellas and parasols made heretofore have been so constructed that the inclined ribbraces prevent the top or center of the umbrella from being held near the head, and as this requires the umbrella to be held very high it does not afford as much protection as it would'if it could be held lower.

The object of my invention is to avoid the above defects.

The invention consists in an umbrella or parasol provided with a support formed of four rods pivoted to each other at the ends, the upper ends of the upper rods being pivoted to the middleof the umbrella-top frame and the lower ends of the lower rods being pivoted to each other at the handle end of the umbrellasupport, these several rods beingprovided with braces and binding-rods and locking-springs, as will be fully described hereinafter. I

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a cross-sectional elevation of my improved umbrella or parasol, showing it raised or opened. The four rods A. B O D are pivoted to each other at the ends and carry the umbrella-top A. The upper rods, (J and D, are beveled at their upper ends, as shown in Fig. 2, and are provided with recesses, into which a metal plate, a, of the shape shown in Fig. 3,.passes.

Parallel with each surface'of the plate a a metal plate, b, is placed, these plates being re-. moved in Fig. 2. The upper ends of the rods G D are pivoted to these metal plates a and b by pintles 1 and 2 passed transversely through the plates a and b and through the upper-ends of the rods G D. For the purpose of holding the rods A, B,

U, and D in; the proper position when the umbrella. is raised the rods 0 D are united by brace-rods E, having one end pivoted to the rod D by means of the pintle 5 and the other end pivoted by pintle 6 to the lugsd of the sliding sleeve 0 on the rod 0, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 2.

Between the lugs or jaws d a latch-lever, f, provided with a transverse socket, g, is loosely mounted on the pintle 6. The :upper end of this lever is provided with a slot, h, into which :1 lug or stud, h, of the red 0 passes when the umbrella-top is raised.

One end of the lever f is provided with a spring, hby the action of which the upper slotted end of the leverfis pressed against the red C, so that when the sleeve 0 slides up the rod 0 the lug or stud h of this rod 0 will snap into the slot It of the leverf, whereby the rods E will be locked in position and will hold the rods 0 and D separated. The rods A and B, to the upper ends of which the rods 0 D are pivoted, are united at their lower ends by a hinge, i, and at their upper ends they are provided withhinge-platesj, held on these rods A B by rivets or tacks 7 and S, and on the lower ends of the rods 0 and D by a pintle, 9, whereby hinged joints are formed. The meetingends of the rods A, B, C, and D are cut out or recessed, so as to overlap each other, the inner parts of the upper rods, (3 and D, and the outer parts of the lower rods, A B,

The handle part is provided with a buttonstud, q, to which an elastic band, 1', is attached,

which serves to hold the parts of the umbrella or parasol together when the same is closed.

The pivoted rods A and G andB and D form two rods provided with ajoint at or above the middle, permitting of folding of the rods,which are pivoted to each other at the top and bottom, parallel with each other when the umclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. An umbrella or parasol constructed, substantially as herein shown and described,with a support formed of a series of rods pivoted to each other and constituting a frame which forms two parallel rods when the umbrella is closed, and an irregular quadrangle or lozenge when the umbrella is opened,whereby the head and hat of the person carrying the umbrella or parasol can be placed within the quadrangle, so as to be directly under the middle of the umbrella-top, as set forth.

2. The combination, with an umbrella-top, of a support formed of two rods provided with hinges between their ends, theserods beingpivoted to each other at the lower or handle ends and at their upper ends at the middle of the umbrella-top frame, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination, with the umbrella-top A, of the rods A, B, C, and D, forming the folding support for the umbrella-frame, of which rods 0 D are pivoted to each other at the middle of the umbrella-top frame, the upper end of the rod A being pivoted to the lower end of the rod 0, the upper end of the rod B to the lower end of the rod D, and the lower ends of the rodsAand B pivoted to each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

4. The combination, with the umbrella-top A, of the rods A, B, 0, and D, pivoted to each other in the manner described, and of the brace-bars E, pivoted to one of the upper rods,

0 or D,and to asleeve, c, sliding in the other upper rod, 0 or D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

5. The combination, with the umbrella-top A, of the rods A, B, (J, and D, pivoted to each other in the manner described, of the pivoted brace-bars E, the sliding sleeve 0, and a looking device attached to this sleeve, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

6. The combination, with the umbrellatop A, of the rods A, B, C, and D, pivoted to each other in the manner described, of the bracebars E, the sliding sleeve 0, to which one end of the bars E is pivoted, the stud or catch h, projecting from that upper rod, (3 or D, on which the sleeve 0 slides, and the latch f on the sleeve a, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

7. The combination, with the umbrella-top A, of the rods A, B, (l, and D, pivoted to each other, as described, the umbrella-point c and the brace-bars E, and devices for locking these brace-bars, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

8. The combination, with the umbrella-top A, of the rods A, B, G, and D, pivoted to each other, as described, umbrella-point 0 the plates 0 and b, the brace-bars E, and devices for looking these brace-bars, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

9. The combination, with the umbrella-top A, of the rods A, B, U, and D, pivoted to each other, as described, the umbrella-point 0 the crown-plate 0, to which the ribs n are pivoted, the cap 0, the brace-bars E, and of devices for locking these brace-bars, substantially as here- 20 in shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

'10. The combination, with the umbrella-top A, of the rods A, B, O, and D, pivoted to each other in the manner described, of the sleeves ll, adapted to slide on the lower rods, A and B, the brace-rods m, pivoted to these sleeves and to the ribs 12, and of devices for locking those sleeves l l in-position, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

11. The combination, with the umbrella-top A, of the rods A B, O, and D, pivoted to each other, as described, the sleeves l I, provided with slots 0, and adapted to slide on the lower rods, A and B, the brace-rods mm, pivoted to these sleeves l l and to the ribs 11, and the locking-springs k k on the rods A and B, for looking the sleeves Z l in position, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
