UMBRELLA AND PAR'ASOL FRAME. No. 298,944. Patented May 20, 1884.
WITNESSES: I INVENTORI ATTORNEYQ NTlE "rains arena rr icnm ANTONIO CARRARA, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ALFRED GIRARDOT, OF SAME PLACE.
UMBRELLA AND PARASOL FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,944., dated May 20, 1884.
' Application filed February 12, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTONIO CARRARA, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Umbrella and Parasol Frame, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of umbrella frames in which the bent springs and slots therefor in the handles and runners are dispensed with, and in which the outer ends of the braces or stretchers engage plate-springs secured within bent plates or sheaths on the ribs, and to which bent plates the ribs are pivoted.
The invention consists in dispensing with the bent plates or sheaths and their platesprings, and in forming or securing upon the ribs perforated lugs or eyes, to which ribs, above and on either side of the lugs, are secured springs for the forked ends of the braces to engage, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of an umbrella provided with my improvement, one half being shown opened and the other half closed. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of part of one rib and the forked springpiece on the same.
The ribs A are pivoted to a ring, B, secured to the stick 0 near the end of the same. The braces D are pivoted to a sleeve, E, held to slide on the stick 0 and to perforated lugs on the ribs. The sleeve E is not slotted like the sleeves usually used 011 umbrella-sticks, and the stick is not provided with the usual spring-catches. The outer ends-of the braces D are fiattened, forked, and squared, as shown. On each rib A a semi-tubular forked piece, G, of spring metal, is secured by means of solder or rivets in such a manner that one shank G will be at each side of the perforated lug F.
In place of the piece G, two separate strips or,
shanks of spring metal can be secured to the ribs. The opposite squared edges of the ends of the braces D are adapted to rest against the bottom edges of the spring-shanks G. If
the umbrella is opened, as shown at the righthand side of Fig. 1, the bottom or inner edges of the shanks G rest against the straight upper edges of the outer ends of the braces D, and thus hold the several parts in place. If the umbrella is to be closed, the sleeve E is drawn down, thus causing the upper ends of the braces to turn 011 the lugs or jaws F, and when the umbrella is closed, the opposite or upper edges of the flattened ends of the braces rest against the bottom edges of the spring shanks G, and thus hold the several parts in place. I am aware that it is not new to construct an umbrella-frame with the braces or stretchers pivoted within metal sheaths on the ribs, said sheaths being apertured to receive the hooked plate-springs against which the ends of the braces bear; also, that it is not new to secure the sheath to the ribs in such a manner that the ends of the braces or stretchers will bear against said ribs, which serve the purpose of springs, and I do not desire to claim such construction, broadly, as of my invention. The advantages of my construction are that it is much cheaper and simpler than the above. The tubular pieces G and their springs may be applied to ribs that are already provided with the perforated lugs F.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the forked braces D and the ribs A, provided on their under sides with perforated lugs F, of spring shanks or strips secured to the ribs on either side of the said lug, whereby the forked ends of the braces will engage said spring-shanks, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the forked braces vD, and the ribs A, provided on their under sides with the perforated lugs F, of the semitubular piece G, secured to the ribs to one side of the perforated lugs, and formed with two spring-shanks extending along the ribs on either side of the lugs, substantially as set forth.
ANTONIO CARRARA.

CLARENCE T. VAN DEREN, GEO. M. GARDNER.
