Be it kn own that I, SIMON SCHWARTZ, a'citizen of the United States, and a resident of Joplin, in thecounty of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,

I and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to umbrellas and parasols.

Theobject is to produce an umbrella-stick having a removable handle and tip, so that it may be taken apart and made shorter, in order to admit of its being packed in a trunk or valise when traveling; furthermore, to produce an umbrella-stick which shall be simple of construction, efficient and durable in use, and which may be constructed at but a slight With these objects in view the invention consists in an umbrella-stick,-the handle and tip of which are so'constructed that they may be removed and replaced at will; furthermore, in the various novel details of construction, as will be hereinafter fully described in the specification, illustrated in the drawings, and

At a point near the outer end of this spring is secured a catch, 9, which extends through an opening, 10, formed in the said handle, and is designed to engage the recess 3 in the flange of the ferrule on the stick. Immediately in front of this catch is secured a pin, 11, designed to engage the opening 4' The upper away, as shown, so as to fit within the openin g in the ferrule, and thus present a neat and finished appearance. Now it will be seen readily that when the handle is pushed within the ferrule it will be prevented from working loose by means of the pin 11, which engages the opening 4, before referred to, and by pressing down the catch 9 the pin will be thrown out of contact with the opening in the ferrule, thus allowing the handle to be withdrawn.

In order to prevent the handle from having any lateral play, a pin, 12, is secured in the handle opposite the opening in the same and engages a recess, 13, in the flange of the fer rule, so that the handle will be prevented from shaking or working loose from any cause.

On the opposite end of the stick to that on which the handle is mounted is secured a thimble, 14, to which the ribs 15 are secured. This thimble is made of a solid piece of metal, and is provided with screw-threads on its inner surface, so as to screw upon the stick, instead of being secured thereon by means of a rivet, as with thimbles of the ordinary construction. Above the flange 16, in which the ribs are secured, is formed a flange, 17, under which the material with which the umbrella is covered is secured. Thus when the umbrella is to be packed away and the top is removed from the thimble the material with which the umbrella is covered will be prevented from working loose by means of the flange before referred to. The ferrule 18, to which the tip 19 is secured,

is provided with the usual drip-cup, 20, and also with a screw-threaded projection, 21, for engaging the threads in the end of the thimble, so that it may be removed at will without the necessity of removing a rivet or other form of fastening device.

It will thus be seen that by constructing an umbrellastick, handle, and tip in the peculiar manner described herein, the handle and tip may be removed at will Without interfering with any other parts of the umbrella, so that it may be packed away in a small space, and that by means of the peculiar spring within the handle it may be placed upon the stick and removed with but little trouble.

By making the ferrule carrying the dripcup in the peculiar manner shown, should the tip become broken from any cause, it maybe readily replaced with a new one without the necessity of replacing an entirely new stick, as would be the case with umbrella-sticks of the ordinary construction.

If desired, the stick shown in Fig. 5 maybe employed, which is provided with screwthreaded joints, instead of the spring, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby allowing both the handle and tip to be removed from the stick, as in the case of the one before described.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with the handle of an umbrella, one portion of which is made 1101- low, of a plug fitting in the said hollow portion and held there by means of a pin, the end of the said plug being cut away to form a shoulder, to which is secured a curved spring or springs carrying a pin or pins for engaging openings in a ferrule on the stick, to hold the said handle in place thereon, substantially as described.

2. The combination,with thespring mounted upon the plug secured within the handle and carrying a pin for engaging an opening in the ferrule secured to the stick, of a catch designed to engage a recess formed in the edge of the ferrule, whereby the pin may be pressed down and out of contact with the opening in the ferrule, and thus release the handle, substantially as described.

3. The combination, with an umbrella-stick having a hollow handle provided with a spring carrying a pin for engaging an opening in the ferrule secured upon the stick to hold the said handle in place thereon, of a thimble screwed upon the opposite end and provided with a flange above the ribs, under which the material with which the umbrella is covered is secured, substantially as described.

4. The combination, with a thimble provided with a flange under which the material covering the umbrella is secured, of a dripcup provided with a screw-threaded projection designed to engage the threaded opening within the said thimble, and carrying on its outer ends a tip, whereby the said tip may be removed when the umbrella is to be packed, substantially as described.
