APPLIOATION FILED MAY 8. 1907 WITNESSES PATENT oEEroE.
CHARLES LOMB, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING UMBRELLA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed May 8, 1907. Serial No. 372,470.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES LOMB, va citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to folding umbrellas, and the invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive umbrella that can be easily and quickly folded into a compact form, whereby the umbrella can be conveniently carried in a small parcel within a valise or trunk.
Briefly described, my improved umbrella comprises a two-part stick having a detachable tip. Upon the stem is slidably mounted a runner for spreaders for supporting the telescopic ribs of the umbrella, the spreaders also serving to move the telescopic sections of the ribs.
The detail construction entering into my invention will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view ofa portion of an umbrella constructed in accordance with my invention, illustrating the same in a folded position in dotted lines, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the outer end of one of the inner rib-sections of my improved umbrella, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the inner end of'one 0f the outer or telescopic sections of the ribs, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the outer end of one of the spreaders of the umbrella.
To put my invention into practice, I provide a stick 1 comprising three sections, a handle section 2, an intermediate section 3, and a tip section 4, said tip section being detachably mounted in the upper end of the section 3 by threads 5. The sections 2 and 3 are detachably connected together by a threaded plug 6 mounted in the confronting ends of said sections. Upon the upper end of the intermediate section 3 is mounted a notch 7, to which is pivotally connected ribs 8, the outer ends of inner rib-sections being provided with lugs 9 and recesses l0. Slidably mounted upon the rib-sections 8 are outer or telescopic rib sections 11, the outer ends of said sections being pierced, as at 12, whereby a cover (not shown) can be secured to said sections. The sections 11 are slotted as at 14, to receive the lugs 9 of the ribsections 8, the outward movement of the telescopic sections 11 being limited by the closed portions 15 of the sections 11. The innermost ends of the telescopic sections 11 are provided with pierced lugs 16, and pivotally mounted between said lugs are the outer ends of the stretchers 17, said ends being pointed, as at 18, to engage in the recesses 10 of the ribs 8 and hold the telescopic sections 11 in extended position. The inner ends of the stretchers 17 are pivotally connected to a runner 18 mounted upon the stick 1 of the umbrella. A conventional form of clasp 19 is employed for holding the runner in adjusted position. By pulling downwardly upon the runner 18, the pointed ends of the stretchers 17 can be swung out of the recesses 10, and when the stretchers are folded inwardly against the stick of the umbrella, the telescopic sections 11 slide upon the ribs 8 and assume the position shown in dotted lines Fig. 1 of the drawing. When the tip section 4 and the handle section 2 are detached from the intermediate section 3, the umbrella occupies comparatively small space.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a folding umbrella, the combination with a stick, a notch carried thereby, and a runner mounted on the stick, of a rib comprising an inner section pivotal at its inner end to the notch and having a notch in the underneath face near its outer end, a lug carried by said inner section at its outer end, a hollow outer rib section telescoping the inner rib-section and having a slot receiving the lug of said inner rib-section, and a stretcher pivoted at its inner end to said runner and at its outer end to said outer ribsection and having a projecting pointed outer end engaging the notch in said inner rib-section and holding said rib sections in extended position.
2. An umbrella having a rib made in inner and outer sections, the outer section being hollow and telescoping the inner section and the inner section having a notch, and a stretcher pivoted to the outer section and having a pointed projecting end extending beyond the pivot point and engaging in said notch in the inner section whereby the outer section is held against sliding movement on the inner section when in the extended position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the pres ence of two witnesses.
CHARLES LOMB.
