FOLDING UMBRELLA.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AN BIALOZYT, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Hartford, in the county of Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and -useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a folding umbrella and the objects of my invention are,

first, to provide an umbrella that can be reduced in its longitudinal dimension whereby it can be conveniently carried in the pocket or in a valise; second, to provide an umbrella with a telescopic stick and foldable ribs that permit of the umbrella being easily folded without injury to the cover thereof, and third, to provide a strong, durable and inexpensive umbrella that is highly etlicient for the purposes for which it is intended.

I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, where- 1n:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the umbrella stick, one of the ribs and the spreader there of, showing the umbrella in a raised position, Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the umbrella folded, Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one of the ribs, and Fig. dis a perspective view of the handle section of the umbrella stick.

The umbrella stick comprises a tubular handle section 1 having a handle 2 and a tip section 3 adapted to slide into the section 1. The section 1 has a longitudinal slot 4c and the outer end of said slot is in communication with a bayonet or angular slot 5, while the inner end of said slot terminates in proximity to the handle 2.

The inner end ofthe tip section 3 has a guide screw eye 6 that enters the slots 5 and 4. IVith the guide screw eye dlooked in the slot 5 the tip section 3 is held in an extended position relatively to the section 1, but by shifting the section 1 relatively to the guide screw eye 6, the section 1 can telescope the section 3, as shown in Fig. 2. The outer end of the tip section 3 has a conventional form Specification of Letters Patent.

Pivotally connected to the runner 8 in a similar manner to the inner rib section 11 is a spreader 12 and the outer ends of the rib section 11 and the spreader 12 are integral and coiled, as at 13 to form a loop or stop 14.

Pivotally mounted between the convolutions of the coil, by a pin 15 is the inner eye end of an outer rib section 16, the outer end of' said outer rib section terminating in an eye 17, which permits of a cover (not shown) being easily connected to the outer ends of the ribs. The loop let serves as a stop to limit the opening movement of the outer rib section 16 and said outer rib section can be easily swung upwardly into parallelism with the inner rib section, as shown in Fig. 1, while the runner 8 assumes a position in proximity to the notch 7 and holds the spreader 12 in parallelism with the inner rib section 11.

It is thought that the utility and manner of folding the umbrella will be apparent without further description and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.

What I claim is In a folding umbrella, the combination with a stick having a notch and a runner, of inner rib sections pivotally connected to said notch, spreaders pivotally connected to said runner and having the outer ends thereof coiled and formed integral with said inner rib sections, loops carried by the outer ends of said inner rib sections, and outer rib sec tions pivotally connected to the coiled portions of said inner rib sections and said spreaders and adapted to be limited in an opening movement by said loops.
