To a whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Ln ROY S. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Endicott, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in folding umbrellas and the object in view is to produce a simple and efficient device of this nature so arranged that the ribs may telescope one within another and the stick which is made up of sect-ions disconnected, thereby reducing the umbrella to a small compass.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the manner of connection of a brace and rib section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view showing the manner of holding the telescoping rib extended. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of one of the braces, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a rib shell and spring catch thereon.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates an umbrella stick which in the present instance is shown made of two parts having threaded connections with each other. The usual runner B is mounted upon the stick and to which a brace C is pivoted at one end and its other end is pivotally connected to a pin passing through an aperture D formed in a lug 1) upon a telescoping rod D a detail View of which is shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. E designates a hollow section of one of the ribs pivoted at E to the notch member F. Said rib section E is provided with a longitudinal slot H, adjacent to one end of which is a resilient finger K having an offset or recess K therein. Said rib section D telescopes within the section E and the shank portion of the lug D is movable in said slot. A lateral projection D upon the lug is adapted to frictionally contact with the under surface of the resilient finger K and which latter will yield to allow said lateral projection to pass into the recess or offset K, thereby tending to hold the two sections of the rib extended.

While in the drawings I have shown but a single pair of telescoping ribs, it will be understood that all are to be similarly constructed and pivotally connected to the runner. When it is desired to fold the umbrella, the runner is moved down upon the stick and the sections D telescoping within the shell sections E and the stick disconnected to reduce its length, thereby making an umbrella substantially half the length of the usual umbrella and in a compact and convenient form for transportation in valises, etc.

When it is desired toextend the umbrella, the sections D are withdrawn and automatically locked in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

What I claim to be new is:-

A folding umbrella comprising a stick, rib sections telescoping one within the other, one of said sections being longitudinally slotted, a'lug at the end of the inner of the telescoping sections and movable within said slot and provided with an angled projection, said slotted section having an in tegral resilient finger at one end of said slot and which finger is provided with an oflset opposite the end of the slot, the free portion of the linger adjacent to its .oifset being in a plane parallel with the slot and projected over the edge thereof, the offset provided for thereception of the angled projection of said lug, the face of the lug being adapted to frictionally engage that portion of the finger which is parallel to the edge of the slot, aifording means for holding the rib sections extended, as set forth.
