To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Dessm L. Graeme, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an improved umbella, and has for its primary 0 ject to rovide an improved sectional, jointed umbrella stafi, whereby the stafi sections may be relatively ositioned so that the umbrella cover W111 be centrally disposed over the person carrying the umbrella.

It is also another object of the invention to provide a very simple joint connection between the stafi sections, and means for locking the joints a ainst breaking so as to maintain the sta rigid when the umbrella is closed.

It is a further general object of my inventionto improve and simplify the constructi'on of umbrellas of the above character, whereby the same are rendered highly con venient andv serviceable in practical use and capable of manufacture at small cost.

With the above and other objects in view, in the novel features combination and arrangebe hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates one of the end sections of the umbrella staff or rod to which the handle 6 is attached, 7 the other end section to which the ribs of the cover 8 are suitably connected, and 9 the intermediate-staid section. are constructed of tubular material in the usual manner, and the end sections 5 and i are connected to the relatively opposite ends of the intermediate section 9 by means of my improved joint, whereby the several staff sections may be angularly disposed with respect to each other as shown in Fig. 1, or extended and locked in longitudinally alined relation. The particular construction of this joint connection between the staii sections 1 will now proceed to describe I in detail.

Each of the staii joints includes the member 10, preferably formed of steel and pro- 11 upon which a locking sleeve 12 is loosely mounted to rotate. The member 10- is longitudinally slotted, as at 13, said slot dpeningf upon one end of said member and extending into the reduced portion 11 thereof. The sleeve 12 is provided in one of its ends with a rectangular notch or recess 14 to coincide with the slot 13. The other end of the member 10 as shown at 15, is adapted for engagement in the end of the tubular staii section and is riveted or otherwise permanently fixed thereto.

The other member 16 of the joint is in the form of a fiat, rectangular tongue 1? which projects from the cylindrical body of said member, said tongue being provided at its end and in its opposite longitudinal edges with the notches 18. The body of the member 16 is likewise provided with a reduced, cylindrical stem 19 to be fixed within the other section of the umbrella staff. The tongue 17 is disposed within the slot 13 of the joint member 10 and is loosely mounted upon thepivot pin 20 traversing said slot and fixed at its ends in said joint memher. The maximum width of the tongue 1? is equal to the diameter of the joint memher-10, while the width of the reduced end of said tongue is equal to the diameter of the reduced portion 11 of said joint member. It will thus be apparent that when the joint members are disposed in longitudinal alinement and the tongue 17 is within the slot 13, upon rotating the sleeve 12 in one direction, the notch 14 in the end thereof is moved out to the slot 13, as shown in Fig. 1, and the member 16 is then held securely against pivotal movement with respect to the joint member 10. In moving the sleeve to its locking position, the inclined Wall 21 rides upon the pin 22, thereby tending to shift the lockin sleeve longitudinally, and by such frictiona co-action with the pin, preventing the casual turning movement of the sleeve from its locking position. The sleeve 12 is also provided in its end, in diametrically o posed relation to the notch 14, with ashal ow recess 23, the base wall of which merges into the end edge of the sleeve to provide a cam surface 24. Thus, after the joint has been broken, the rotation of the sleeve is reversed, and this cam surface 24 bearing a ainst the joint member 16 rocks said mem er upon its pivot and causes the edge of the tongue 17 to bear tightly against the end of the locking sleeve. Thus, the stafi sections will be rigidly held in their angular positions against relative movement.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of operation, and several advantages of the device will be clearly and fully understood. By positioning the several sections of the umbrella stafi as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the umbrella may be carried with the stafi sections 7 disposed immediately above the head of the user so that the water will not drip from the outer edge of the cover upon the back and arms, as 18' the case with the ordinary umbrella where the stafi is in one, continuous section. en the sections of the joint are locked in alinement, their periphmay move freely over the joints. lhe device as a whole is of exceedingly simple construction and may be readily applied to the ordinary umbrella in the manufacture thereof at but slightly increased cost. e

device is also very durable and of great convenience and serviceability in practical use. While I have herein shown and described the preferred construction and arrangementrotatable locking sleeve mounted upon one I of said members and having means which,

in one position of the sleeve, permits of the angular movement of'the other joint member, said sleeve also having additional means to co-act with the latter joint member when the sleeve is rotated in one direction to securely lock said joint member in its angular positlon to the first joint member.

A joint of the character described including a joint member having a longitudinal slot therein opening upon one end of said member, a second member having a tongue ivotally mounted in said slot, a rotatable locking sleeve mounted upon the first joint member, saidsleeve having a recess in one end ada tedto coincide with said slot to permit o the angular movement of the second joint member, and means for limit ing the rotation of the sleeve to such position, said sleeve being also provided with additional means to co-act with the second joint member when the sleeve is rotated to locking positionto rigidly hold said second joint member against movement from its angular position with respect to the first joint member.
