WILLIAM KIlINE AND JULIUS G. J ADIGKE, OF WILMINGTON, DELAi/VARE.
COMBINED SQUARE, CALIPERS, AND DIVIDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,487, dated February 8. 1887.
Application filed July 29, 1886. Serial No. 209, 130.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM KLINE, a native of Hungary and a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and JULI US G. JADICKE, a native of Russia and a subject of the Czar, both residing at WVilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuririg-Instruments; and we do quring device which consists of a pair of compasses, a pair of inside and outside calipers, and a straight-edge or rule which may be folded so as to form asquare, the parts being organized so that they may be folded parallel with each other, so as to provide a convenient pocket in1- plemeut, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate our invention, Figure l is a perspective view of our improved implement, showing the parts opened, so as to better illustrate our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, which shows the straight-edge adjusted so as to form a trysquare, and Fig. 3 is a side view showing the parts folded upon each other. Fig. etis a sec-@- tional view taken on line 00 x of Fig. 3.
A A refer to the members of the straightedge or rule, which are secured to each other by a pivot, a, said pivot also securing the legs of the compasses and calipers to each other and to the membersof the straight-edge. The memberA of the straight-edge is provided with an upwardly-projecting pin or stop, I), which is located near onecorner of the same, adjacent to theipivotpin a. The member A is provided with a circular end, 0, and at one side thereof with a curved recess, (1, against which said pin or stop will abutwhen the parts are adjusted upon each other, as shown in Fig. 2. Said groove or recess 01 and the stop I) provide a means whereby the members A and A will be located at right angles with each other when (No model.)
it is desired to form a try-square. site side of the member A is provided with an open slot, 0, the base of which will be on a line with one side of the pivot-pin a and with the lower edge of the member A, so that when the member A is turned upon the pivot-pin a so as to lie parallel with the member A said open slot 0 will engage with a pin or stop, I), so as to maintain one or both edges of the parts A and A rigidly in alignment with each other, and thus form a straight-edge. One of the sides of the members A and A is provided with a scale representing inches.
13 B refer to the legs of the pair of compasses,
the upper portion of one of the legs being recessed, so that the upper portion of the adjacent member will lie within the same, as is usual in the construction of such instruments. These compasses lie adjacent to the member A of the rule or trysquare. Next to the compasses B B and upon the pivot-pin a are secured the legs 0 C of the calipers. The upper portion of these legs adjacent to the pivot-pin a lie one upon each other, so that they can be turned completely around or reversed, and the legs are bent or curved only at their extreme outer ends, as shown at f, in order that they may be employed either as inside or outside calipers.
If desirable, the pivot to may be screwthreaded at one end and provided with a thumb or set screw for locking the parts in a desired position;
We claim- I A 1. In a measuring-instrument, the combination of the rules A and A, pivoted together at one end, one of said rules being provided with a stop adjacent to the pivot, the pivoted end of the other rule being rounded in a threequarter circle terminating in a recess, d, and slot e, whereby the rules may be folded upon each other, or locked at rightangles with each other, or extended and locked with their respective edges in alignment, substantially as described. a
2. In acombined measuring-iustrument, the combination of the rules A A, the dividers B, the calipers O, and the pivot-bolt, said parts being constructed and arranged as described, whereby the dividers and calipers may be turned a complete revolution upon said bolt.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a com- The oppobilled measuring-instrument consisting of rule In testimony whereof We affix our signatures A, having a stoppin, rule A, having a curve in presence of two witnesses" at its end terminating in a recess, (1, and slot e, WILLIAM KLINE. the dividers, the calipers, and a threaded piv JULlUS G. 5 ob-bolt; connecting the parts together and to I each other, and to lock them in difi'erenb positions of adjustment, substantially as described.
