FRAMING-SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,709, dated January 20, 1880, Application filed October 17, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAHLON B. CORNELL, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and Stateof Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new Improvement in Framing-Squares, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a combined rule, square, and gage for carpenters use in framing, the object of the invention being to furnish an implement adapted for carrying out all the purposes for which the ordinary square is used with greater facility, convenience, and
' accuracy.
In the. accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved square. Fig. 2 is a side elevation at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view.

The square may be made of wood or metal,
7 or the main portion of wood with metal strips attached and forming the arms at right angles, and the square is provided with a graduated scale, as usual, on each portion and on both sides, if desired. 7
Each portion A of the square is similar to an ordinary square, the implement being two squares united at their back edges at an angle ofninety degrees. The portions A, for convenience of folding when not in use. will be hinged other half of the square, being a quarter-inch wide, audits inner side one inch from the innor edge of A, and the outer slot one-half inch wide, and its inner side two inches from the inner edge of A,the other portion A made five inches wide and the thickness of the other half, in addition to lap as hinged, and .With
the inner slot 0 one inch wide, with the inner side one and one-half inch from the inner edge of A, and the outer slot 0 one inch wide, with the inner edge three inches from the inner edge of A. These proportions give the usual sizes for mortises and tenons, but may be varied, if desired, and with a smaller square for light Work the sizes will be proportionately reduced. r
In use the implement is to be laid to the angle of the timber and the timber marked for squaring the end along the arms d. This will give the line on two sides at once, and the opposite side may be marked in the same manner. To mark out a mortise or tenon, the side A adapted to the required measurements will be placed with the end of its slots at the line previously made, or at the squared end, and the tenon or mortise marked out by the edges of the slots, the length being also marked by the scale of the square.
By these means the work may be conveniently and accurately done without the necessity of shifting the square from side to side, marking the points, and then lining the work, as required with the single square.
The gage formed by slots 0 may also be applied to an ordinary square, and thus extend the convenience of the square.
It will be seen that the improved square above described is adapted for all the purposes of an ordinary square, and is much more convenient for use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A framing-square consisting of the two portions A, with arms d, connected together by hinged joints, and fitted with hooks or similar devices, whereby the two parts may be held rigidly at right angles, substantially as shown and described.
2. A framing-square consisting of the two portions A, hinged together, and formed with slots 0, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
