SQUARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1906.
Application filed Julyi3, 1905- Serial No. 268.275.
To all whmn it may concern.-
Beit known that I, SAMUEL RANsoM PARKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maxwellton, in the county of Clayton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Squares, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in squares, and more particularly to that type employed by carpenters and cabinet-makers to determine the proper angle for a miterjoint.
It consists, essentially, of a stock having two arms or blades pivoted at one end thereof and extending in opposite directions and connected by links to a sliding clamp operating on the stock.
It has for its object to produce a device of this character which will quickly and accurately determine the required angle for the joint, which will be simple and durable in construction, and which canbe manufactured at comparatively small cost.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of.
the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the application of the device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the stock.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates the stock, which is provided with a longitudinal slot 2, extending through from opposite sides. One face of the slot 2 is hollowed out to form a depres sion 3, so that the sliding clamp can move freely back and forth. A second slot 4 eX- tends into the opposite face of the slot 2 and forms a guideway for the screw 5 used to lock the sliding clamp. Arms or blades 6 are pivoted at the points 7 to one end of the stock 1 and are connected to the sliding clamp by means of links 8. Strips of metal 9 are placed upon the opposite faces of the stock and serve to reinforce same against splitting and also aid in retaining a true edge by preventing warping.
In operation it is simply necessary to place the square so that the blades 6 will conform to the angle and then tighten the thumbscrew 5. The device can then be placed upon the item to be cut and the proper angle indicated by marking along the blade. This does away with the old method of placing two pieces of lumber in the corner and marking where they cross.
In practice it may be found desirable to graduate the stock 1 on each side of the slot 4, the graduations 10 on one side thereof designating the angle between the arms 6 and the stock 1, while the graduations 11 on the opposite side of the slot 4 designate the nu1n ber of sides in the polygon, the angle between the sides of which would be equal to the angle between the two arms 6 of the implement. This would enable the unskilled operator to instantly set the instrument so as to mark the proper angle for forming a hexagon, octagon, or similar article and would be the means of saving considerable delay.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is-- As a new article of manufacture a square for carpenters use comprising a stock formed with a longitudinally-extending slot opening transversely therethrough and one of the sides produced by said slot being solid and formed at its inner edge with a recess the other side being formed with a slot 4, a block mounted to slide in the slot 4 and provided with a thumb-nut the bolt of which takes into the said groove, arms pivotally connected to one end of the stock, links connecting the respective arms to the said block and the face of the stock being provided with two sets of graduations, one set designed to indicate the angle between the said arms and stock while the other set is numbered to designate the number of sides in the polygon produced with an angle equal to the angle between the two pivoted. arms.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
