Description

A TTORNE Y.
Dec. 22, 1925- L. M. KERR COMBINATION IMPLEMENT Filed May 31 1923 3 mo mm T F T E T E 7:m J Wu w COMBINATION IMPLEMENT.
Application filed May 31,
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOGAN M. KERR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ebensburg, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Implements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined try squares, bevels, and gages, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the eiiiciency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this cha "aeter having improved means for locking the parts in ad justed position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of the improved instrument from opposite sides.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a ransverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the body or stock illustrating a modification of the construction.
The improved device includes a body or stock formed from a metallic strip bent into U-shape transversely, whereby spaced sides 10 and 11 and a closed bottom 12 are formed as shown, and with laterally directed flanges let and 15 at the outer edges of the side portions.
In Figs. 1, 2, 3, L, and 5. the side portions of the body are shown. reinforced by tiller members 16 and 17, preferably of wood, and secured in position by clamp screws represented at 15 which pass through both the reinforcing members and likewise through both side portions of the body, as indicated in Fig.
A blade member comprising a straight por tion 19 and a segmental portion 20 in one piece forms a part of the improved device and is provided respectively with graduations to denote inchesand fractions of inches 1923. Serial No. 642,639.
on both faces of the straight portion 19 of the blade and with degrees of a circle on one side represented in Fl 1. and graduations to denote the pitches of roof rafters and the like on the other side as represented in Fig. 2.
The gradnations may be varied or changed as required, and it is not desired to limit the invention in any respect to any specific arrangements of the gruduations.
The straight portion 19 corresponds in width to the depth of the stock Ill-11, so that when seated within the stock, the outer edge of the portion 19 comes exactly even or flush with transverse faces of the flanges 14 and 15.
The sides 10 and 11 of the stock, the filler members 16 and 17, and the free end of the straight portion 19 of the blade, are perforated to receive a clamp screw 21, while the blade is also perforated at the juncture of the parts 19 and 20 in alinement with corresponding perforations 26 in the sides 10 and 11 of the stock and the filler members 19 and 20, to receive a clamp bolt 22 whereby the stock or blade may be locked together with the straight portion 19 housed within the stock.
By this means the implement forms an efficient and convenient square, the bolt 22 being threaded in the apertures in the sides 10 and 11, as shown in Fig. 4-. hen the implement is to be employed as a bevel or gage, the clamp bolt 22 is reversely rotated until its inner end is free from the blade, when the stock can he moved with its free end over the segmental part 20 of the blade as shown in Fig. 2, and when adjusted to the required position, the members 522-23 can be utilized as a set screw to lock the stock to the scg n'lental. part of the blade. as illustrated in Fig. 5.
The members 22- "'3 thus serve to lock the blade in. any required position.
lVhcn the stock is formed as shown in Figs. 3, 5, the straight part 19 of the blade will be provided with recesses to receive the clamp screw 18 when the portion 19 is dis posed within the stock, but when the stock:
formed shown in Fi 6 the screws llfi 18 and recesses 25 will not he required.
The clamp screws 91 and 22 are provided with winged heads, to enable them to be readily actuated.
The flanges 14.15 are cut away, while the ion lit)
filler members 16, 17 When employed are likewise cut away to form a denoting edge or pointer indicated at 24, in Figs. 1' and 2, to enable the adjustment to be accurately made relative to the, graduations.
By removing the clamp screws 21 and 22, the stock or handle may be detached, to enable the blade 1920 to be employed as a prctractor, and by releasing the clamp screw 22, the stock may be moved into a position greater than 90 degrees, if required. The aperture 26Wl1i0l1 for the time being is free from the clamp screw 22, may be utilizedto receive a pencil point or the like to inscribe a segment.
The improved device can be constructed of any required size and any suitable material, and it is not desired to limit the invention to any specific material.
The preferred embodiment of the inven tion is disclosed in the drawings and'set forth in the specification, but it Will be understood that modifications Within the scope of the claim may be made in the construction Without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is An implement of the class described comprising a straight blade and a segmental blade, said straight blade having inwardly opening recesses in spaced relation, a stock formed of spaced members and pivoted at one end to opposite faces of the straight bladeandhaving threaded apertures in the free ends and movable over the segmental blade, said spaced members constituting the stock and connected by spaced pins which engage'in' the spaced recesses of the straight blade "When the members of the stock are disposed'over the straight blade and limit the movement in one direction, and said straight blade and segmental blade being provided respectively With threaded sockets spaced-at equal distances from the pivot of the stock and'at right angles to each other, anda threaded holding pin engageab'le alternately in the threaded apertures of the stock or against the segmental blade between the spaced sockets.
'In testimony Wl1G180f,'I aifix my signature hereto.
