To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS Lewis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Smithfield, in the county of Fayette andState of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bevel Gages for Squares; and I do declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to improvements in bevel gage attachments for squares.
One object of the invention is to provide an attachment of this character having improved means for securingit to .a square whereby a timber maybe marked for a base or a perpendicular cut, and at. the same time, the hypotenuse of the cut may be readily ascertained.
Another object is to provide a bevel gage attachment for squares which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, accurate and reliable in operation, and well adaptedto the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view, th invention consists of certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan View of a portion of a square showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view through one arm of the square and through the attaching member and one end of the rule of the attachment taken on the line 2+2 of Fig. 1'. Fig. 3 is-a similar view through the other arm of the square and the rule taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the rule attaching and pivoting member of the device. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the clamp for fastening the bevel rule in its adjusted positions.
Referring more particularly-to the drawings, 1 denotes the square to which my improved attachment is applied, said squarebeing of the usual or any desired construction and havlng arranged thereon along its outer edges the usual graduated scales of,

My improved bevel comprises a rule or straight edge 2 in the form of a bar which may be constructed of wood, metal, or any other suitable material and which in the,
present instance is shown as having one edge 3 rounded and as having in its op'p'osite sides'longitudinal grooves, or recesses 4. The opposite edge of the rule is fiat and has on one or both sidesa graduated scale of measurement, said scale having anydesired number of subdivisions to the inch, and said subdivisions are arranged along the edge of one of the grooves 4: which is disposed substantially through the center or midway between the edges of the rule as shown.
In the rule 2 near one end and in the cententhereof is a bolt hole 5 the center of wh ch is in registry with the first graduation or beginning of the scaleon the rule and said center of the bolt hole 5 is also dis- H posed at the point. where said first graduation or beginning of the scale registers. the edge ofthe groove 4:, said edge of the groove forming the longitudinal line for the inner ends of the graduation marks as shown.-
With the bolt hole. 5 isv engaged a stud bolt in I 6 formed on the inner side of a square gripping and rule attaching member 7 which is in the form of a circular plate 8 having on one edge a lateral extension 9 and having in its center a circular opening 10. Around the. edge of the. openinglO and extending along the center ofthe upper side of the eX- .tension 9'is a bead ,11 and in the wall of the ber 7 is engaged.
The circularportion or plate "8 of the member 7 is increased in thickness at its lower end above the upper end of the bolt 6 to form a square shoulder 13 and thatportion of the upper end of the bolt 6 which projects beyond the edge of the opening 10 in the plate is recessed as at 14 to'receive the outer edge of the armgof the squarewith which the member 7 is engaged, said outer edge of the square having a close engagement with the shoulder 13 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. v j
On the lower side of the outer end'of the "extension 9 of the member 7 is formed a depending lug 15 provided with an overhanging flange'16 which forms a groove or channel 17 adapted to receive the inner edge of the arm of the square as is also clearlyshown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. When thus constructed and engaged with the arm of the square the member 7 is securely fastened in its adjusted positions by a set screw 19 which is arranged in a threaded aperture in the lug 15 on the extension 9 of the member 7 and which is adapted to be screwed into engagement with the edge of the arm of the square as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
When the member 7 is fastened to the arm of the square in the manner described and the rule 2 engaged with the bolt 6 on said member, said rule may be swung on the bolt 6 to bring the rule to any desired angle across the space between the arms of the square and to bring the scale of the rule or any graduation thereof into registry with any of the graduations onthe arm of the square with which the free end of the rule is engaged, thus indicating the altitude or perpendicular of a cut,-the hypotenuse of which will be indicated on the scale on'the rule while the base of the cut will be indicated by the graduation on the opposite arm of the square with which the indicating notch 12 on the member 7 is engaged. The rule is held in pivotal engagement with the stud bolt 6 by a thumb nut 20-as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
In order to hold the free end of the rule in the position to which the same has been adjusted in the manner described, I provide a clamp 21 havin upper and lower clamping jaws'2 l, andasemicircular portion 25 connecting said jaws. The semicircular portion 25 has its inner edge recessed to form the opening 26 to conform to the shape of the head 3 on the rule 2. The opening 26 has its mouth reduced. so as to form the rule engaging projections 27, which are slidably en 'a 'ed in the aforementioned rooves 4e.
The inner edge of the upper arm of the clamp is recessed to form a right a-ngular'notch 22 which when the clampis in position forms a space above the upper side of the rule 2 to receive the arm of the square with which the free end of the rule is engaged. In the outer end of the upper arm o-f'the clamp 21 is a threaded aperture to receive aset'screw 23 whichisadapted to be screwed down into engagement with the arm of the square and to draw or clamp the rule into tight engage ment'with the underside of the arm of the square as clearly shown inFigs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
By constructing and arranging the rule attaching devices as herein shown and described, it will be seenthat they -may be readily released to permit the same to be adjusted on the square and to permit the rule 2 to be readily swung or adjusted to the desired angle and firmly secured in this position.
'From the foregoing" description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the prin ciple or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a graduated square of a bevel attachment comprising a rule having thereon a scale of measurement, a rule attaching member comprising a substantially circular plate having therein a cir cular opening and formed at one end with an extension provided with a set screw adapted to engage the inner edge of one arm of the square, a stud bolt formed on said plate and adapted to pivotally engage said rule, said bolt having its center in registry with the outer edge of said arm, said center of the bolt being indicated on the plate by a notch formed therein, said notch being adapted to register with the graduations along the outer edge of said arm, and a clamp adapted to be engaged with the free end of the rule and with the other arm of the square whereby the rule may be clamped in adjusted position on said other arm.
2. The combination with a square of a bevel attachment comprising a rule having on its opposite sides longitudinal grooves and having along one of said grooves on one side of the rule a scale of measurement, a rule attaching member comprising a substantially circular plate having an extension, an oifset shoulder formed opposite said extension and adapted to engage the outer edge of one arm of said square, an offset lug on the extension of said plate, a flange on said lug adapted to engage the inner edge of said arm, means whereby the rule attaching member is fastened in its adjusted position, a rule attaching bolt on said offset shoulders having its center in registry with the outer edge of the arm, a nut to hold the rule in pivotal engagement with said bolt, and a'U-shaped clamp'having its inner edge formed to correspond to the'shape of-the rule and provided with oppositely disposed shoulders adapted to engage the longitudinal grooves in said rule, said clamp being adapted to hold said rule in position on the other arm of said square.
3. The combination with a square and a bevel attachment comprising a graduated rule, of a rule attachingmember comprisinga substantially circular plate having an extenmen, a shoulder formed on saidplate opposite sa d extension and adapted to engage the Fouteredgeof on'e'arm of said square, an offset lug on the extension of said plate, a flange formed on said lug and adapted to engage the inner edge of said square, a set screw extending through said lug and into engagement with said square, whereby the rule attaching member is held in its adjusted position, a bolt formed on said plate and adapted to engage one end of said rule, said bolt having its center in registry with the lower edge of the square, a nut to hold the rule in pivoted engagement with said bolt, and means to adjustablv secure the free end of the rule to the other arm of the square.
4:. The combination with a square of a bevel attachment comprising a rule having a bead formed on one edge and having on its opposite sides and adjacent said bead longitudinally extending grooves, said rule having on one side thereof along said grooves a graduated scale of measurement, means to connect one arm of said square with one end of the rule, and an attaching device to adjustably secure the free end of said rule to the other arm of the square, said device com prising a clamping member having upper and lower clamping jaws, said upper jaw having therein a right angular recess to slidably receive said last mentioned arm, a semicircular body connecting said jaws having its inner edge recessed to form an opening corresponding tothe circular bead on said rule, oppositely disposed shoulders formed on said upper and lower jaws and adapted to slidably engage said longitudinal grooves in the rule whereby the latter is slidably retained within said clamp.
