FRANK J. GOODIE,
OF DOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
COMBINATION PROTRACTOR, BEVEL, AND LEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22. 1920.
Application filed June 9, 1919. Serial No. 302,698.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. FRANK J. (loonin, a citizen of the United htates, residing at Dover, in the rmunty or' Stratford and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful lm rovemcnts in Combination Protractors, evels, and Levels, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to form a combination instrument which can be used as a protractor, or as a square, or to lay ofi' angles or levels, or as a level, the device comprising a body or stock provided with two adjustable arms pivoted thereto at one end, and these arms can be set to various angles with respect to the stock or to each other. The stock is provided with a scale of angles, and one of the adjustable arms controls a pointer which cooperates with the scale to indicate the angle at which the arm is set. A stop is provided for the other arm. which engages the same when it is set at an angle of to the stock. The adjustable arms can be folded to closed position within the stock, so that the instrument will occupy very little room when folded. The stock is also provided with a liquid level which can be used when desired. The invention resides in the particular arrangement and combination of parts for the purposes specified.
The device is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the same with the arms set at 90 to the stock. Fig. 2 isan edge view at a right angle to Fig. 1. Fi 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. 1 1g. 4 is a detail showing the edge opposite to that shown in Fig. 2.
The stock or body of the instrument may consist of two wooden pieces or sides indicated at 22 and 23, fastened together at one end by rivet 16 and metal face pieces 17 and at the other end these pieces are connected by a fulcrum or pivot stud 3, provided with a clamp nut 8. The body or stock is preferably square in cross-section. The stock is slotted lengthwise, the slot being divided by a middle filling piece 13 with spacers 24 at one end, forming longitudinal slots to receive the adjustable arms or blades 1 and 2 when the latter are folded to closed position after the manner of a jack-knife, these blades being pivoted to the stock by the stud 3. The spacers 24 have shoulders 24 which act as stops for the blades 1 and 2 when the latter are closed.
13y reason of the pivotal connection the blades 1 and 2 can be swung out to various angles, or can be closed into the compass of the stock.
The blade 1 is connected by the pivoted link 4 to a pointer stud G. which slides in a slot in the plate 9, consisting of a steel piece set in the inner l' ace of the stock piece 23, the stock being recessed as indicated at 10 to allow for the movement of the pointer. This pointer travels over a scale 21 of angles. also set in the stock piece, under a slot 12 in a metal face plate 11, through which slot the scale can be seen to permit the adjustment of the blade to the angle desired.
The other blade 2, can he swung around to a position opposite the blade 1. as shown in Fig. 1, so as to form a T square with the stock, and a pivoted dctcnt 19 is provided, pivoted at 20 to the stock piece 22. and which can be swung to engage its shoulder Ill) with the blade 2 when the blade is at a right angle to the stock, or which can be swung out to allow the blade to pass to a more acute angle. In any position the blades 1 and 2 can be set in line with each other or at various angles to each other on either side of the right angle. and when set the may be clamped in position by tightening the nut 8.
The stock is out out at 18 and the blades have openings 25, to permit thc latter to be grasped and opened. -When closed, their edges are flush.
A liquid level glass 15 is also set in the stock piece 22, under the flush plate 14, so that the stock can be used as a level when desired.
By means of the construction shown and described a combination instrument is pro vided which is capable of various uses as will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and when the blades are folded the whole device occupies very little space.
I claim:
1. A- combination instrument comprising a stock slotted lengthwise, and a pair of arms pivoted at one end to the stock and foldable into the slot, said arms being adjustable to various angles with respect to the stock and to each other, one of the arms being capable of swinging to the side of the stock opposite to the other arm and a detent pivoted to the stock and cngageable with the lust mentioned arm when swung to the opposite side of the stock.
2. An instrument enm u'ising :1 stuek slutted lengthwise, :1 scale set in the steak beside the slut. the atom-k hnving an opening: in its side through which the scale (an be seen, :1 slatted guide extending alnng the genie, :1 stuli siiihihie in the slot in the guide and having; a pninter euiiperuting with the scale,
an arm pivoted to the stock and a link 10 eunneuting the nun] inn] the stud.
In testimony whereof, I aiiiix my signatlll'e in presenen of twn witnesses.
