COMBINATION INSTRUMENT.
Application filed MayZO,
To all whomJz't may concern:
Be it known that I, Mn'LnUnN B. HAN- coon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Meigs, in the county of Montgomery and State of Alabama, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Combination Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination instruments, and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide, in one assemblage, parts, elements, and factors, which may be used independently,or conjointly, as a bevel, protractor, rule, compass, or dividers.
lVith this object in view, the instrument includes a body provided with longitudinal straight edges, and one squared end, and one arcuate end.
A point is radially disposed at the arcuate end of the body and is aligned with the median longitudinal dimension of the body. A combined bevel and protractor is pivotally mounted in the body, and the pivot is located at the center of the arc of the are uate end of the body, and upon the median longitudinal dimension of the body. Compass legs are pivotally mounted upon the body, in the vicinity of the squared end thereof, and the pivot is located upon the median longitudinal dimension of the body.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the instrument, with the parts thereof extended.
Figure 2 is an end view of the instrument, with the parts thereof folded within the body.
The instrument includes an elongated body, which is rectangular in transverse section, and which is provided with longitudinal straight edges 2. The said body is also provided with an edge 3, which is squared, or disposed in a plane at a right angle to the edges 2. The body is further provided with an arcuate end at, the center of the are being disposed upon the median longitudinal dimension of the body. The body 1. is further provided at its arcuate end with a radially disposed point/5, which is aligned with the median longitudinal dimension of the body. The body 1 is provided at its edge with a recess 6, which leads in from the arcuate end thereof. The protractor disc 7 1924. SerialNo. 714,632.
is formed with a radially disposed bevelled rule 10. The rule 10 is of the same transverse Width as the transverse width of the body 1, and the rule 10 may be received within the recess 6 of the body. The median longitudinal dimension of the rule 10 is aligned with the axis of the pivot 8. The body 1 is further provided with a recess 11, which leads in from the. squared edge 3 thereof, and a bolt 12 passes transversely through the body and across the recess 11. Compass legs 13 are pivoted upon the bolt 12 and may be housed within the recess 11', and a wingnut ll, is screwed upon the bolt 12 and may engage the side of the body where by the compass legs 13 may be clamped at adjusted positions with relation to each other. One of the compass legs 13 carries a graduated segment 15, which passes transversely thru the other compass leg 13 and the last mentioned compass leg is provided with a set screw 16, which when tightened is'adapted to engage the segment 15 and hold the compass leg at adjusted position with relation to each other.
It is apparent that the blade 10 may be adjusted with relation to the body 1, and secured whereby the instrument may be used for laying off an angle of any predetermined number of degrees. The movement ofthe protractor 7, with relation to the point 5 will indicate when the blade 10 is at.
the desired angle with relation to the body.
\Vhen the legs 13' are used as. a compass or as dividers, the body 10 may serve as a handle for moving one leg around the other,
or for stepping ofl distances in av usual having parallel straight longitudinal edges,
and an arcuate end edge, said body being provlded with a point located at its arcuate end edge, said point belng ahned with the median longitudinal dimension of the body, edge thereof, said protractor being provided said body provided with a longitudinally ex- With a radially disposed blade having 10 tending slot intersecting the arouate end straight parallel side edges, the median lonedge and the straight longitudinal edges, a gitudinal dimension of the blade being alined 5 circular protractor plate pivoted at its cen- With the axis of the pivot upon which the ter to th body vvi liin the slot upon its meprotractor is mounted, dian longitudinal dimension and at the cen- In testimony whereof I affix my signature. tor of the are of curvature of the curved MELBURN B.-HANCOCK.
