COMBINATION DRAFTING INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,871, dated January 6, 1903.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH LEITscHUH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use-` from one form to the other and is compact,V
readily portable, durable, and inexpensive of construction.
l To these ends my invention consists in certain novel features, which I will now proceed to describe and Will then particularly point out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of an instrument embodying my invention in one form. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the use of the device as a compass, the position ofthe parts for use as asquarebeingindicat-ed bydottedlines. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional View taken on the line 0c of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a vieW illustrating the use of the device as a trammel or beam-compass, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail View of one of the attachments employed in the construction shown in Fig. 4.
In the said drawings, 1 indicates the metal body of the instrument, which is triangular in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 3, the three faces being indicated, respectively, by the reference-numerals 2, 3, and 4. The bodyis provided at one end with a needle-point 5 and at the other end With a knurled head 6, and both head and point may be made re- -rnovable by a screw-th readed connection with -low interior space 7 of the body 1.

In connection with the body 1 I employ an adjustable arm 12, consisting of a flat bar or plate of a width equal or substantially equal to the face 4 of the body l, against which it is adapted to lie Hat. The arm 12 is provided With a longitudinal slot 13, and a screw 14 passes through the slot 13 and also through the slot ll of the plate 8, the outer end of the said screw being provided with a knurled head, while its inner end is threaded into a block 15, which ts and slideswithin the hol- The arm 12 is provided at one end with a needle-point 16 and Vat the other end with a pencil-point 17, both adjustable and removable in the usual manner.
One of the two free faces of the body 1 is divided along its edge, as indicated at 18, into inches and subdivisions thereof or on any other suitable scale, so as to form a measuring-rule, as well as a straight-edge. The face 4 of the instrument is provided at one or both ends with a protractor-scale 19, this scale being preferably formed on the end of the plate 8 which is rounded at its extremity and the lines of the scale diverging from the end of the slot in said plate. The face 4 is also provided with diagonal lines 2O at different angles to the axis of the body, so as to permit the ready laying 0E of angles on each side of said body at diierent points thereof. Aline 23 drawn across the face4 of the instrument at right angles to the axis thereof enables `the arm 12 to be brought into position for use as a square, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. It will be seen that the instrument as thus organized may be used as a compass, as indicated in Fig. 2, the point of connection between the arm l2 and body 1 being varied as desired by moving the block 15 within the body l and moving the arm 12 relatively to the clamping-screw 14, as desired. The arm 12 may be so turned as to use either the needle-point 16, thus making the instrument a divider, or the pencil-point 17, thus using the instrument as a compass. When IOO not in use, the arm 12 may be caused to lie flat against the face 4, with its edges parallel with the edges thereof, and when clamped in this position, which is shown in Fig. 1, the instrument may be readily carried in the pocket, being compact and well adapted for this purpose. By placing either edge of the arm 12 to register with the lines 23 or 20 the instrument may be used as a square or bevel, and by similar use of the arm 12 in connection with the scales 19 the instrument may be used as a protractor. This latter operation may be accomplished by shifting the arm 12 longitudinally of the slot, so as to bring one ot' its edges into proper relation with the lines of the protractor-scale 19, so as to cause it to indicate the desired angle.
When it is desired to use the instrument as a trammel or beam-compass, I provide the attachments shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in which 24 indicates an arm provided with a needlepoint 25 and having a divided loop 26, triangular in form and adapted to fit over the body l, on which it may be clamped by a screw 27. 28 indicates a similar arm provided with a divided triangular loop 29, adapted to be clamped on the bar by a screw 30. This arm 28 has pivoted on it, by means of a combined pivot and clamping-screw 3l, an extension 32, carrying a point or pencil 33, said extension being provided on its upper edge with a wormgear segment 34, with which meshes a worm 35, mounted in suitable brackets on the arm 28 and having a head 36, by means of which it may be rotated, so as to provide for the adjustment of the extension 32, which latter may be clamped in position by means of the screw 31 after adjustment. These trammelpoints may be readily slipped over the body and secured thereon at the desired distance apart, and this distance may be further nicely regulated by means of the worm 34.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise details of construction hereinbefore described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, as these details may obviously be modified without departing from the principle of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Acombinationdraftinginstrumentcomprising a body triangular in cross-section and having a longitudinal internal recess and a face provided with a longitudinal slot communicating therewith, a block sliding in said recess, a longitudinally-slotted arm provided at its opposite ends with a needle-point and pencil-point, respectively, and a clampingscrew passing through both slots and screwing into the block, said body portion being provided at one end with a needle-point, substantially vas described.
2. Acombinationdraftinginstrumentcomprising a body triangular in cross-section and having a longitudinal internal recess and a face provided with a longitudinal slot communicating therewith, a block slidingin said recess, a longitudinally-slotted arm provided at its opposite ends with a needle-point and pencil-point, respectively, and a clampingscrew passing through both slots and screwing into the block, said body portion being provided at one end with a needle-point, and at the other end with a knurled head, substantially as described.
3. Acombination draftinginstrumentcomprising a body triangular in cross-section and having a longitudinal internal recess, a slotted plate closing said recess, and a block sliding Within the recess and held in position by the plate, in combination with a longitudinally-slotted arm provided at its respective ends with a needle-point and a pencil-point, and a clamping-screw passing through both slots and threaded into the block, said body being provided at one end with a needle-point and at the other end with a knurled head, substantially as described.
4. In a combination drafting instrument, the combination, with a body triangular in cross-section, having one of its edges divided and having a longitudinal recess closed bya slotted removable plate, said plate having protractor-scales at its ends, and transverse lines at right and other angles to the aXis of the body, and said body being provided with a needle-point at one end and a knurled head at the other, of a longitudinally-slotted arm provided at its respective ends with a pencilpoint and a needle-point, a block sliding in the interior recess of the body, and a clamping-screw passing through both slots and threaded into the block, substantially as described.
