Be it known that 1. PAUL GEZPACI-I. a cit-- izen of Poland. residing at Warren. county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented "tain new and usetul Improvements in Compasses, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in compasses. particularly instruments to be used in topographical work or map work. This compass is furthermore especially well adapted for taking measurements on raised works of art for the use of sculptors or the like.
It is the principal object of the invention to provide a compass of this character which is provided with two movable and one central stationary leg, the points of which a-e adjustable in longitudinal direction.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a compass of this type which can be conveniently operated by means of an adjusting gear.
lVith these and other objects in view which will become more fully apparent as the description proceeds the compass is illustrated in the accompanying drawing formiira a material part of this disclosure. and in wl1ich Figure 1 is a tront elevational view of an instrument constructed according to the present invention.

Between the movable legs or members and 11 of the compass which are united at their upper ends in the well known. manner, a third substantially vertical and stationary member 12 is provided carrying intermediarv its length. a transverse pin 13 pro vided withan operating grip or handle 14- a its rear. and a head 15 at its front end extending through the member 12.
The pin 13 carries in rear of member 12 and between the same and the handle 14:. a gear 16 in mesh with the teeth of two F superimposed segments 11 and 18, the upper of which is integral with the member 11. while the lower. 18, is integral with the segment 10. and both segments extend with their free ends in opposite directions beyond the members 10 and 11.

The lower ends of the legs or members 10 and 11 are hollowed to form sockets for the pins 22 and 23 adapted to be secured therein.
Near their lower ends the pins 22 and 23 carry longitudinally split sleeves 2d and 25 adapted to be held in their adjusted positions to the work piece by means of clamp screws 26 and 27 respectively.
The instrument operates as followc It for instance a sculptor desires to take measurements on a statue or the like, he adjusts the length of the central leg by means of the screw 21 to an elevated pointof the statue and can then take the desired measurements by adjusting the split sleeves 21- and 25 by means of? the screws 26 and 27 to fit the depressions or crevices of the statue or the like.
Having thus described invention. what I claim is 1. An instrument of the class described comprising two movable members adjust able foot parts at the lower ends of said members. and a stationary member between said movable members, means for simultaneously operating the movable members to be set in any desired angle to said stationary member. said stationary member being provided with a socket. and a needle in said socket adapted to be vertically adjusted and locked in its adjusted position.
