Description

pt-20,1927. as SCHVETZ 1 643,033
FOLDING STEEL SQUARE AND PROTRACTOR 'Filed April 13, 1926 INVENTOR bangs dmx BY ATTO%EY 4 Patented Sept. 20, 1927.
GEORGE S. SCHVE'IZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING STEEL SQUARE AND PROTRACTOR.
Application filed April 13, 1926. Serial No. 101,684.
This invention relates generally to squares such as used by machinists, mill Wrights, carpenters and the like, the invention having more particular reference to a novel type of square. The invention has for an object the provision of an improved square of simple construction and.
arrangement of parts. For the comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had.
to the following description and aocompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth;
showing the adjustable attaching means as used in combinationwith the modification of my improved square.
As here embodied my improved square comprises a main member 10 grooved or notched, at both sides of one extremity, as at 11, to engage the movable member 12, which is provided with an elongated aperture 13, located at the center of one extremity thereof. It being understood that the movable member 12 is pivotally attached to the said main member 10, as atlt, by a screw, bolt, or the like so as to permit the said movable member to be pivoted as designated by the dot and dash lines 15, Fig. 1, 0f the accompanying drawing and to be used as a protractor in conjunction with scale 24: on the movable member 12 and coacting scale 26 on the main'member 10. Referring in particular to Figs. 3, 4 and 5, of the accompanying drawing, in which I have illustrated a modification of my improved square, the above mentioned movable m-ember 12 has slidably attached thereto, as at 27 by. a dovetail tongue, adapted to slid- .ably engage a dovetailed recess 28, formed in themovable'member' 12, a supplementary member 17 depending therefrom and parallel to the main member 10. The supplemenvtaryv member 17 has attached thereto, as
at 29, a spring 30, depending downward therefrom, and provided with an enlarged extremity 31 adapted to engage serrations or teeth out or otherwise formed in the recess 28, as a means of holding the supplementary member 17 in any desired relative extended position in the recess 28. The
supplementary member 17 being grooved or notched at both sides of its extremity, as at 18, to engage a second movable member 19, which is provided with an elongated aperture 20, located at the center of one extremity thereof, itbeing understood that the second movable member 19, is pivotally attached to the said supplementary member 17, as at 21, by a screw, bolt, or the like, so as to permit the said second movable member 19 to be pivoted as designated by the dot and dash lines 22.
It will be further understood that the main member 10, the movable member 12, the supplementary member 17, and the second movable member 19, areprovided with graduations 23, adjacent to the sides thereof, preferably in inches and fractions thereof, suitably engraved, etched, or otherwise affixed thereto.
, It will also be understood that the movable member 12, and the second movable member 19, are provided with graduations 24, adjacent to the curved portions 25, in 7 degrees, and minutes, and them-ember 10 and the supplementary secondary member 17, are provided with graduations 26, adjacent to the curved portions 25, so as to provide a'scale, or adjustment for the said movable member 12, and the said second movable ni ember 19. g
It will be further understood that my improved square may be made of any suitable material,- preferably steel, and in any suitable siZe such as may be desired by artisans of 'all trades using a square of this description.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as tremity, a movable member pivotally attached to said main member, and formed with a dovetailed recess, a supplementary main member formed at one end with a 5 dovetail tongue engageable in said dovetailed recess, a spring depending from said supplementary main member, serrations formed .in said dovetailed recess, and said spring being formed with an enlarged extremity engageable against said serrations. 10
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
GEORGE S 1 SCHVETZ.
