Description
Dec. 8, 1931. w. F. SHORT COMBINATION BAR AND LEG COMPASS Filed D80. 29, 1926 Patented Dec. 8, 1931 warren srerss WAYNE F. SHORT, OF BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA COMBINATION BAR AND LEG- COMPASS Application filed December 29, 1926. Serial No. 157,821.
This invention relates to bar and leg compasses and one object is to combine the features of both in such a way that the resulting instrument will be more accurate and easy to operate than any previously known. An-
other object is to have one or both legs detachable from the bar so an extension can he used for large circles.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the whole instrument. Fig. 2 is a view of a pencil or needle point attachment for the instrument. Fig. 3 is a front end view of one slider. Fig. l is a view of a pen attachment.
ments are mounted on the graduated bar 16 and are connected to the legs 5. They are slotted on one or both sides and carry a vernicr scale having a zero point located above the working points of the working instruments and readable on the graduated bar; lower edges of the sliders are projections 18 which serve to hold the pen, pencil or points in position. Set screws 19 screw against the ends of the removable working instruments and make them secure. On the upper edges of the sliders are set screws 14; which serve to clamp the sliders to the bar after they are set at the desired position. Square vertical projections 12 on the upper edges of the sliders with pins 13 hold the binding posts 11 in place.
These posts are slotted and fit into the connectors 8 and around the screws 10 and are made secure by the thumb-nut 9 which draws the two sides of each connector together. These connectors have narrowed ends and pivot loosely on screws 7. Legs 5 are enlarged and flattened at their upper ends and pivot loosely on screws 4 in the saddle piece 3. Screw 6 is placed through the lower end of the saddle-piece and holds it in shape. Handle 1 screws into the saddle-piece.
The zero of the bar is in its center or inward from the ends.
F or drawing large circles an extension to one or both legs can be inserted between the sliders and legs.
With this description of my invention what I claim is:
2. In a compass the combination of a. graduated bar, two sliders mounted on the bar, binding posts carried by the sliders, working instruments carried bythe sliders, means for clamping the sliders to the her, two connectors each attached to one of the binding posts, two legspivotally connected at one end to each other and to the two connectors at their other ends, and means for clamping the connectors to ,the binding posts.
In testimony whereof? I afiix my signature.
WAYNE F. SHORT.
