The socket 26 has an inner sleeve 28' upon which'fits a similar sleejve29 to which the arm 30 of the circling pencil is attached by means of a thumb screw 31 and near the upper end of the arm .30 is carried, atoothed segment 32 with'which is geared apinion' 33 on a thumb nut 34 which is journaled in the arm 350i the instrument and by this means, the pencil 36 may be adjusted for certain circles or arcs and held there bythe mlon. The upper surface of the block 18 has teeth 37 Flg. 7 to receive the studs on the lower side of a plate ,40 which is acted on by the nut- 41 so that all of these parts connected with the block are held firm and rigid when it is set up in any desired angle for the operation of the pencil 36.
Atthe rear end of bar-17 and playing in its slot 42 is a threaded stud 43 which is secured to a block 44 that is adapted to slide on thebar and lock to same a slide 45 which straddles the stud and has -forward hooked ends or fingers 46 to engage the block 16.
The object oi this slide and its adjustment is, that it may be set on the block 44 so as.
to allow a certain amount of play between the forward end of the block and the fingers 46. this play amounting to the pitch or depth of the teeth to be drawn sot-hat when the stud 14 is used as a center, a circle may be struck while the bar is adjusted against the base piece 10 and another circle may be struck while the fingers 46 are rested upon thelbase piece at the proper distance on the sea e.
In order to successfully operate the block 18, its stud 20 may be set. at the desired point along the bar. 17 and locked there by means of the nut to move and when it is swing to the desired point on the stud 20, it is locked at that point by. he nut 41 so that circles may be struck by the-pencil 36-from the center 27.
It is obvious that in the construction of this device, the ,detailsmay be modified or 23.. The bloirk is still free otherwise arranged without departing from the pencil but releases same when pulled out.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination witha base piece adapted to be. secured to a board, of a slotted bar secured to the base piece, and an adjustable slotted block with a. socket carried-atthe end of the bar and adapted to receive a circling pen or pencil, a studded plate mounted on the block, the said block having its upper base provided with grooves adapted to receive the studs of the said plate, a bolt extended through the said block and plate, and a nut on the bolt substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a drawing instrument, the combina tion with a grooved base piece adapted to be secured to a board, a sliding block on the same, a slotted bar with a scale, a bolt securing the base piece, the block and the bar together, at any desired angle, a sliding plate provided with a stud arranged at the under side of said bar, and a block pivoted on the stud on the upper side of the bar and adaptedto carry a' circling pen or pencil.
3. In a drawing instrument, the combination with a grooved base piece having perforations in its ends, of a sliding block on the same, a. slotted scale bar, a plate carried by the bar, a stud and nut carried by the said block and adapted to clamp the said bar at difi'erent'points on the base, a swiveled blcck adjustably mounted on the outer end of the bar, and a circling pen or pencil .carried by the said block.
- 4, The combination'with a grooved base piece having a. scale and adapted to be secured to a board, of a. sliding block carried in the said grooves, a slotted bar with a scale, a stud and nut on the block, a plate adjustable on the bar and adapted to clamp the bar to the'said base on adjustment of said nut, a swiveled block at the outer end of the said slotted 'bar, and a bolt and nut for.
locking the said block at difierent points on saidbar.
5. The combination with a grooved base piece, of a slotted bar secured to the said base piece, an adjustable block mounted on the said bar and provided with a stud extending through the slot of the bar, a nut for thestud, and a slide mounted on said bar and straddling the said stud and provided with forward hooked ends adapted to engage the end of said block substantially as and for the purpose described.
