Description

A. BLAUVELT.
SQUARE. APPLICATION rumour. 30. um.
Patented May 20, 1919,
\NVENT O y w Wm 75 0.. WASHING AUGUSTUS BLAUVELT, OF PATER-SON, NEW JERSEY.
SQUARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 20, 1919.
Application filed October 30, 1917. Serial No. 199,299.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS BLAUVELT,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Squares, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in squares, and has for its objects the folding of the blade for convenience in carrying, means for hOldiIlg the blade accurately at ninety degrees or at any desired angle.
I attain these objects by the mechanism as illustrated in the accompanying draw ings, in which similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view of the square ready for use.
Fig. 2 is a view of the same with the blade folded out of the way.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the joint.
Fig. 4 is a side view of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a detail of the end of the spring.
Fig. 6 is the locking screw and nut, and Fig. 7 is a view of the shape of the end of the blade and the end of the spring where they come in contact.
In the drawing the square consists of a stock 1, a blade 2 pivoted on the end of the stock 1.
A spring 3 is secured at one end, by rivets or screws 18, to the stock 1. The other end is cut out or shaped as shown at 5 and the curved portion has a groove 17 in it, Figs. 5 and 7.
The blade 2 has one hole near its end for receiving the pivoting bolt 10, and a second hole for receiving the locking bolt 15.
The end of the blade also has a piece out out as at 7 and another at 6, and the portion from 6 to 7 is sharpened as at 20 so as to correspond to the groove 17 in the spring, to prevent slipping past one another when the blade is opened or closed.
The bracket 4 has a piece removed from its ends indicated by 8 which meshes accurately in the opening at 6 of the blade. This bracket is secured to the stock of the square. The hook 23 on the piece 4 also meshes at 22 on the blade.
The opening 5 of the spring also fits snugly in the part 7 of the blade 2 and the hook 21 of the spring likewise fits in the opening 20 of the blade.
On the end of the stock there is a bent clip 9 which acts as an extra guard to prevent the blade from being out of square.
The bolt 10 is shown in its pivotal point in the slot 11 in Fig. 3. This slot is in the blade. There is only a hole in the stock where the bolt passes through.
The locking bolt 15 is fitted in a hole in the blade and passes through the slotted are 12 in the stock.
To open the square the small handle 14 on the nut of the bolt is loosened and the blade is raised, the sharpened portion of the blade between the points 6 and 7 slides in the V portion 17 of the spring, and the part 6 springs into the part 8 of the bracket 4 and the part 7 springs into the part 5 of the spring. The bolt 15 is then tightened,
every part fitting accurately and held se-' curely.
To close the blade the part 2 is pressed in the direction. of the end of the stock forcing the spring back and thus releasing the part 6 from the part 8. In doing this the blade pivots on the bolt 15 to limit of the slot 11. After the parts 6 and 8 and 5 and 7 are free the pivotal point is transferred to the bolt 1.0 and the bolt 15 moves down through the are 12 in the stock.
In the same way the blade can be held by the looking bolt at any of the angles 30, 45, or graduated on the stock.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a square a stock having an arc-shaped slot in one end, a pivot bolt secured in said stock at the center of said arc-shaped slot, and a hook shaped bracket and a spring secured to the same end of the stock, the spring at its free end having a part out out to form a hook thereon in combination with a blade pivoted on said pivot bolt and having its end formed with recesses adapted to interlock with the hooks formed on said bracket and spring, said blade carrying a bolt passing through the slot in the stock to hold the stock and blade in relative angular relation, as set forth and described.
Signed at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, this fifteenth day of October, A. D. 1917.
AUGUSTUS 'BLAUVELT.
