UMBRELLA-STICK.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. Frans Pnnsox, a citizen of the United States. residing at North Easton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella- Sticks, of which the following is a specification.

This invent-ion relates to improvements in umbrella sticks and its object is to produce a device of this class provided with a detachable handle adapted to be secured to either end of the stick.

lVith the foregoingand other objects in view the invention consists in the combination. and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specificat-ion, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of said specification and in which- Figure 1 is a view of an umbrella embodying my improved stick with the handle secured to one end of the stick. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the stick reversed and the handle secured to the opposite end. Fig. 3 is aview of the naked stick with the handle partly in section. Fig. 4 is a view of the handle, partly in section, showing the spring therein which assists in retaining the hinged handle sections in an adjusted position. Fig. 5 is another view of the handle in an altered position.

Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

1 is an ordinary umbrella provided with my improved stick 2. Near either end of the stick I provide a plurality of annular recesses 3 while in other respects the stick is much like the ordinary umbrella stick. My umbrella handle is made in two sections pivotally connected or hinged together as at 4, the lower sect-ion 5 being formed with a cylindrical bore throughout the greater part of its length for the reception of either end of the umbrella stick. A plate 6 is secured upon the part 5 of the handle by a suitable screw 7 which pierces the handle and engages the body of the stick and the other end of the plate 6 is provided with a pin 8 that also pierces the part 5 of the handle and rides in one of the annular recesses 3 of the stick. This arrangement afiords a means for retaining the stick within the handle in variable positions as it is evident the pin 8 may be manually withdrawn from the recess it is Specification of Letters Patent.

temporarily riding in and the stick moved up or down as the case may be until the said pin engages another recessed portion.

Near the top of the part 5 of the handle a cylindrical jacket 9 provided with alternately disposed U-shaped slots 10 is slidably arranged and a pair of oppositely disposed screws secured in the handle ride in the said slots for a purpose which will hereinafter become evident. The upper section 12 of the handle which is secured, as previously set forth, to the lower section 5 by the pivot or hinge 4; is provided in an internally recessed portion as at B with a pin 13 to which one end of a spring (also located in this internally recessed portion of the upper handle section) 14 is secured; the body of the spring being wound about the pivot 4 and its opposite extremity secured in the lower handlesection 5.

When the upper section 12 of the handle is bent at right angles to the lower portion the jacket 9 will reside entirely below the upper handle section and the tension of the spring 14 will serve to keep the two portions in this position; to straighten the handle the section 12 is manually rotated upon the pivot or hinge 4 until it is in a straight line with the other handle portion and the jacket 9 is then rotated until the screws 11 lie in the base of the U-shaped loops 10 when the said jacket is raised vertically until the said screws reach the lower termination of the loop base and the jacket is then rotated in a manner to place the screws in the lower extremity of the loop when the screws 11 will occupy the position illustrated in Fig. 4 and the pivot 4 and a port-ion of either handle section will be encompassed by the jacket and the handle members locked in alinement with each other.

What I claim is 1. The combination, with the stick having a plurality of annular recesses adjacent either end, of a hinged sectional handle whose lower section is provided with a bore, a plate secured to the outer handle section, apin extending through said plate and handle section for engagement with the recessed port-ion of the stick, a slotted jacket slidably arranged upon the lower handle section, screws secured in said handle section adapted to ride in the slotted portion of the jacket and a spring arranged upon the handle hinge and engaging the two handle sections.

2. The combination, with the stick having a plurality of annular recesses adjacent either end, of a hinged sectional handle whose lower section is provided with a bore, n'ieans arranged on the lower handle section for retaining the stick therein at variable positions, a slotted jacket slidably arranged upon the lower handle section, screws secured in said handle sect-ion adapted to ride in the slot-ted portion of the jacket and a spring arranged upon the handle hinge and 10 engaging the two handle sections.
