COLUMBIA PLANDGRAPH co..wAsHlNOToN, n. c.
JOSEPH KIRKLEY AND FRANK A. WHITE, OF AUGUSTA, GEORGIA.
UMBRELLA STRUCTURE.
Application filed June 21, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH KIRKLEY and FRANK A. WHITE, citizens of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of Richmond, and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Umbrella Structures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to umbrella structures, and has for an object to provide an umbrella which will include a novel form of notch and runner respectively, each embodying companion elements which are adapted to cotiperate with each other to form an effective housing for the rib and stretcher ends and which will operate to securely confine and retain the ends without resorting to the use of permanent fastening devices to be engaged with the ribs and stretchers respectively.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a sideview of a portion of an umbrella stick showing the runner and the notch applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section through the rib. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing a slightly modified form of rib.
The umbrella stick 1 may be of any suitable well known construction. The notch 2 comprises companion elements 3 and 4, the former having formed integral therewith a substantially cup portion 5 which is arranged beneath the concavity in the cup 6 in the element 4, the said cup portions having fitted therein the spherical upper ends 7 of the ribs 8. Upon reference to Fig. 3 of the drawing, it will be seen that the ends 7 are constructed as an integral part of the rib.
In the form of the rib shown in Fig. 4, the spherical end 9 is hollow, the walls 10 thereof being clamped or otherwise suitably secured to the portion 11 of the rib.
The element 3 of the notch has formed thereon a circular shoulder 12 against which the element 4 is engaged so as to holdthe cup 6 suitably spaced from the cup 5 to permit of the effective movement of the rib. The elements 3 and 4 of the notch are se- Specification of Letters Patent.

cured to each other to the stick 1 by the rivet 13 or any other suitable well known fastening device. The spherical heads 7 of the ribs are provided with integral projecting portions 14 formed at an angle to the ribs and which are movable in the slots 15 in the cup 6 and in the slots 16 in the cup 5. These ribs are substantially embraced by the walls of the slots 15 and 16 so as to prevent torsion of the ribs adjacent their point of engagement with the notch, it being understood that considerable strain is applied to the ribs at this point on axial movement of the canopy about the stick.
The runner 17 embodies the elements 18 and 19 which are similar in construction to the elements 3 and 4 of the hereinbefore described notch. The rib connecting stretch ers 20 are provided with spherical lower end portions or heads 21 which are fitted in the cooperating cup portions 22 and 23 of the elements 18 and 19. Integral projecting portions 24 are formed on the heads 21 at an angle with respect to the rib and are adapted to be moved in the slots in the cup portions 22 and 23 on pivotal movement of the stretchers to their open or closed positions. These webs act in addition to the Webs 14 hereinbefore described to prevent torsion on the stretchers when the canopy is moved axially of the stick 1.
We claim:
1. In an umbrella structure, a stick, a runner movable thereon, a notch secured to the stick and provided with a slotted cup portion. ribs having spherical heads mounted in the cups of the notches and having formed integral thereon projecting portions disposed at an angle wit-h respect to the ribs and movable in the slots of the said cup portions and adapted to limit the swing of the ribs, and stretchers connecting the ribs with the runner.
2. In an umbrella structure, a stick, a notch secured thereon, ribs connected to the notches, a runner movable on the stick and provided with a slotted cup portion, stretchers connecting the ribs with the runner and provided with spherical heads fitted in the cup of the runner, and integral projecting portions formed on the heads and at an angle to the said stretohers and movable in In testimony whereof We afiix our signathe slots in the cup of the runner, on movetures in presence of two Witnesses. mentof the runner to an open and closed p0- gition JOSEPH KIRKLEY.
3. In an umbrella, ribs having a vertical FRANK WHITE upper end, a projecting portion formed inte- Witnesses:
