To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. CHAMBERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merchantville, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrellas and Parasols, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in umbrellas and parasols; and it consists of the sticks having double tapers, for a purpose more fully hereinafter set forth.

The object of my invention is to prevent umbrellas or parasols when folded from bulging at the joints or connecting portions of the stretchers and ribs, to reduce the thickness thereof, and to impart a symmetrical shape thereto, it being well known that in umbrella or parasol sticks as heretofore constructed said joints or connecting portions abut against the sticks in such manner as to deflect the ribs from right lines, thus occasioning bulging, which my invention obviates.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of an umbrella or parasol stick and frame with the cover removed embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of a portion of the stick embodying my invention on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of a portion of the stick and frame.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the ribs, B the stretchers, and O the stick, of an umbrella. The stick is formed with a taper D, extending from the handle E to the point F. Starting from the point F, a swell Gr is constructed, from which the stick is shaped, with a second taper H extending to the lower end thereof. The said stick is thus formed with a depression, within which lie the joint portions J of the ribs A and stretchers B when the latter are folded against the said stick, as fully shown in Figs. 1. and 3. By this means the ribs A can be folded inward closer to the stick 0, whereby the umbrella may be compactly folded and allow the ribs to assume substantially a right line without bulging around the joints thereof with the stretchers, and thereby produce an umbrella which is reduced in thickness and possesses a symmetrical shape from end to end of said ribs.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An umbrella or parasol stick having a double taper forming a depression for the reception of the joint portions of the ribs and stretchers, substantially as described.

2. An umbrella or parasol stick havinga taper from the handle end, a swell at the innor termination of said taper, and another taper extending from said swell toward the lower end, thus providing a recess or depression for, the reception of the joint portions of the ribs and stretchers, whereby said ribs are brought close to the stick and they maintain a right-lined shape, substantially as described.
