FOLDING' UMBRELLA.

T0 all whom t may concern Be it lnown that I, MORRIS H. HARTZELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Folding Umbrella, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of an improvement in a folding umbrella (or a parasol) composed of sectional ribs, and means thereon and on the stretchers to lock the joints of said sections and hold them rigid in the open position of the umbrella, while readily permitting the unlocking of said joints, and the folding of the umbrella, as will be hereinafter described.

The inventio-n is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, as long as they are vincluded in the scope of the claims.

Figure 1 -represents a side elevation of portions of a rib, and a stretcher of anumbrella, in operative position embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a bottom plan view thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 represent longitudinal sections thereof, the members being in different positions relatively to the open and folded condition of the umbrella. Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of the members shown in the position in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 represents a section, similar to Fig. 3, with the stretcher at a different angle. Fig. 7 represents a section showing the members in the closed condition of the umbrella.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the sections of an umbrella rib,3, the connecting pivot thereof, the latter allowing said sections to be folded one on the other. Beyond the lower end of the upper rib section is the divided head 4, which is a continuity of a sleeve connected with said end.

On the upper end of the lower rib section 2y is the sleeve 5 continuous with which is the head 6, it being noticed that the pivot 3 passes through the divided head 4, and the head 6 and is riveted on said head 4, thus connecting the rib sections, permitting the lower section to fold on the upper section.

The outer end of the head 6 is formed with the nose 7, the latter being adapted when the sections are in operative position, as in Fig. 3, to enter the recess 8 which eX- Specification of Letters Patent.

ists in the head 4 of the upper rib section 1, between the inner end of said rib-section 1, and the pivot 8.

9 designates one of the stretchers of the umbrella, the same having connected firmly with its outer end the sleeve 10, to which is secured the head 11 which by the pivot 12 is mounted on the sleeve 4, it having a nose 18 which extends beyond said pivot so as to enter the recess 8 in said head 4, and in the open condition of the umbrella, to engage the nose 7 of the head 6, as in Fig. 3, and so control the head 6 and consequently the rib section 2 from folding motions, whereby the rib sections 1 and 2 are held as one.

It will be noticed that the inner side of the nose 7 of the head 6 on the rib-section 2 is set-in forming the recess 14, and the head llhas a plurality of noses 13 drawn from the pivot or axis 12 as a center, and properly spaced apart, either of which is, relatively to the condition of the umbrella, opened or closed. In the open condition of the umbrella, the stretcher assumes an obtuse angle to the lower rib section causing the nose 7 to stop against the back of the head 4, and the adjacent nose 13 of the stretcher 9 to tighten and wedge saidnose 7, whereby the head 6 is interlocled with the head 11, and the rib section 2 is held by a vise-like grip of the stretcher on the rib section 1, and so prevented from pivotal motion on thc latter, this being true of all the rib sections and stretchers of the umbrella, but when the umbrella is to be folded, the stretcher is moved by the runner, so that it is comparatively at a right angle to the rib sections at the joint thereof, see Fig. 6, whereby the upper nose 13 of the head 11 is removed upwardly from the recess 14 and the entire nose of the head 6. This unlocks said head 6, when the rib sections 2 may be turned on its pivot 3 upwardly in folded position on the rib section 1. Then the stretcher 9 is also turned on its pivot 12 in folded position on the rib section 1, the several members assuming the positions shown in Figs. 4 and 5, this being true of all of the rib sections and stretchers and so the umbrella is folded.

By manipulating the section 2, it may be turned downwardly and inwardly, and the stretcher is lowered to the normal position of an umbrella in closed condition as shown in Fig. 7 whereby the adjacent nose 13 engages with the nose 7 of the head 6 in the recess 14 thereof, and the ribs are interlocked as one and so prevented from folding or rattling while the umbrella remains in said closed condition.

15 designates a key which is inserted in the sleeve of the head 4 between the same and the adjacent part of the rib section 1, it being adapted to tighten the connection of said head with said section.

16 designates a key which is inserted in the sleeve 5 between the same and the adj acent part of the rib section 2, it being adapted to tighten the connection of said section and sleeve and consequently of the head 6. Each of the keys is provided with an eye 17 for securing the adjacent portions of the cover of the umbrella to said sections respectively.

Having thus described my invention what l. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. ln a folding umbrella, a lower rib section, a head on the inner end of said section, said head having a nose on itsl terminal, and a recess in its side adjacent to said nose, an upper rib section with which said lower rib section is pivotally connected, and a stretcher having its outer terminal provided with a head which is mounted on said upper rib section and formed with a nose which is adapted to enter said recess and engage the wall thereof, in the open condition of the umbrella, and an additional nose spaced from the first named nose adapted to enter said recess and engage the wall thereof in the closed condition of the umbrella comparatively at about the same place on said wall as in the open condition of the umbrella, said noses being centered from the axis of said head of the stretcher.

2. In a folding umbrella, a rib formed in sections, heads respectively on the inner ends of said sections, said sections being pivotally connected, the head of the lower rib section being adapted to enter the head of the upper rib section, a stretcher, and a head on the end thereof, the latter-named head being pivotally connected with the head of the upper rib section and rhaving a plurality of noses thereon, the head of the lower rib section being adapted to have either of said noses of the stretcher engaged therewith at the same place respectively, in the open and closed conditions of the umbrella.
