FOLDING UMBRELLA OR PARASOL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,461, dated. October 14, 1890.

Be it known that I, CHARLES ADNA ANDER- SON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Olayville, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas or Parasols; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in folding umbrellas or parasols in which the ribsare made in two parts hinged together, so as to fold over upon each other, and the handle made in sections, by which construction an umbrella or similar article can be folded into a very small compass.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of an umbrella constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached view of one of the ribs folded over upon itself. Fig. 3 is a View showing the two sections composing the rib separated 0 from each other.

In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the handle made in two sections, which are provided with screw-sockets 2 and 8, by which they may be united or joined to- 3 5 gether.

4 designates the ordinary annulus or ring near the top or upper end of the handle, to which the ribs are secured. These ribs are made in two parts or sections 5 and 6, of ap- 4o proximately equal length, and are hinged together as follows: The outer ends of each section 5 are bifurcated, forming two short arms 7, between which fit the lugs 8 on the sections 6, being pivoted together by means 5 of pins 9. It will be seen that the inner ends of the sections 6 are extended beyond the lugs 8, forming short arms 10, provided with grooved lugs 10. By this construction the sections may be folded upon themselves in 0 one direction, as seen in Fig. 1, but cannot be so folded in the opposite direction, as when straightened out the movement is limited by the lugs 10 of sections 6 becoming engaged with the bifurcated arms 7 of the sections 5.

15 designates the ordinary springcatch for holding sleeve 14: in place when the umbrella is raised.

The umbrella may be used in the manner similar to those in common use; but when it is desired to fold the same, so as to occupy but little space for transportation,storage, or other purposes, the handle sections are unscrewed and the rib-sections are turned or folded upon each other, as in Fig. 2, when the article will be closely compacted and be 7o only about one-third the length it otherwise would be, thus enabling it to be easily carried or stored in a satchel, handbag, or other receptacle.

Vheu it is desired to use the umbrella, the sections of the handle are connected by means of the screw-joint. The ribs and cover are then unfolded, when the umbrella can be used in the ordinary manner. 7

The invention is simple in construction, re liable and eflicient in use, and possesses many advantages, which will be readily apparent and need not be here set forth.

WVhat I claim as my invention is As a-new article, the herein-described umbrella, comprising in its structure a jointed handle having a sliding sleeve thereon pro vided with brace-rods, inner ribsections secured to a ring on the stick and having their outer ends bifurcated, the outer rib-sections 9o pivoted to said inner sections, having a short arm provided with a grooved lug to engage between the said bifurcated ends and a cover secured to said ribs, substantially as described. 5
