lie it known that l, PAUL A. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at lrrlgon7 .in the county of Morrow and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Umbrellas7 of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to umbrellas and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.

.Kn object of the invention is to provide an umbrella structiu'e susceptible of being col-` lapsed or folded whereby it may occupy small space when in storage or not in use.

llfith this object in vview the structure includes a sectional staff having ribs hingedly attached to one section thereof, the said ribs being provided with slidable' extensions to which the cover is attached and braces pivotally connected with the extensions and a ring which is slidably mounted upon the staff.

The umbrella comprises a staff 1 which is composed of sections, the lower end of the upper section being provided with a socket 2, the said socket being provided on its inner walls with L-shaped slots 3 which simulate the usual bayonet slots. The lower'section of the staffl is provided at its upper end with lugs a which are adapted to move along the slots 3 and engage in the ends thereof when the sections of staff are connected one with the other.

The lower section of the staff is provided at its upper end with a recess 5 in which is located a block 6. A spring 7 is interposed between the bottom of the recess 5 and the under surface of the block 6 as best shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing and the upper sur- Speeication of Letters Patent.

face of the said block is normally held above the upper end of that section of the staff on which it is mounted. lNhen a lower section of the stad is connected with an upper sec- Y tion thereof the lugs 4 of the lower section are passed along the slots 3 and the lower section is turned whereby the lugs are carried toward the ends of the said slots and the blocks G of the lower section bearing against the top wall of the socket 2 forces the Said lugs down into the extremities 8 of the slots 3 whereby the adjacent sections are securely locked together.

To-disconnect the sections from each other the lower section is forced in an upward direction whereby the lugs al are carried out of the extremities S of the slots 3 and then the lower section is turned with relation to the upper section and the lugs 4 are with* drawn from the slots 3. The ribs 9 are pivotally connected at their upper ends with a ring 10 which is mounted upon the upper section of the staff and the lower ends of the said ribs are offset as at 11 and provided with laterally disposed lugs 12. Extensions 13 are slidably mounted upon the ribs 9 and cach extension is provided with a band 111 which is adapted to receive the offset portions 11 of that rib to which it is attached and which is also adapted to bear against the lug 12 when the said extension is in an extended position with relation to the rib. A cover 15 Vis connected with the extension 13 and the ring 10 in the usual manner and braces 16 are pivotally connected at their outer ends with the band 14 and pivotally connected at their inner ends with a ring 17 which is slidably mounted upon the shaft 1.

The sections of the staff 1 are provided with suitable catches 18 which are adapted to hold the ring 17 at adjusted positions upon the staff 1.

To collapse or fold the parts of the umbrella the sections of the staff 1 are disconnected from each other as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The extensions 13 are then moved along the ribs 9 and by means of the braces 1G the ring 17 is moved up so that it may surround the lower portion of the stafll section upon which the ring 10 is mounted. Thus the parts are collapsed as shown in Fig. 2 and may be packed in small space for shipment or storage.

The handle 19 is provided at its upper end with a Socket 2O which is adapted to the lower end of the lower staff section 1 as best shown inrFig. 6.

. The lower section 1 is provided with a spring catch 2l which is adapted to engage in an opening 22 at the Side of the socket 2O when the parts are assembled.l

Having described the invention what is claimed l. In-an umbrella, a staff composed of sections, one section being provided at. its end` with a socket having` in its side walls L- shaped slots and'down'wardly disposed eX- trernities at the inner ends thereof, the adjacent section being provided at its entiwith outstanding lugs adapted to enter the said slots and the extremities thereof, and a spring pressed block carried in the last mentioned section and projecting beyond the end thereof and adapted to engage the top wall of the socket whereby the lugs are held in the downwardly disposed extremities of the slots.

2. An umbrella comprising a staff, ribs hingedly connected therewith, said ribs being provided at their free ends with offset portions having laterally disposed lugs, extensions having bands which slidably receive the ribs and adapted to receive the said offset portions thereof whereby the outer surfaces of the ribs and extensions may aline with each other, braces pivotally connected l with the bands and a ring slidably mounted upon the staff of the umbrella and pivotally connected with the said braces.
