ZYGMUNT MROCZKOW'SKI, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDNG UMBRELLA.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZYGMUNT Mnocziiowsur, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county ot' Cook and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, oi which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to folding umbrellas, and has for its principal object, to provide a device of the above character in which the ribs are l'oldable and are so arranged and connected to the stretchers that when the umbrellaA is folded, or open, the ends of the ribs and stretchers will not protrude beyond the plane of the ribs, so as not to tray or damage the cover of the umbrella.
A further object o'l" my invention is to provide a folding umbrella which will be extremely simple and inexpensive of construction, and which will not easily get out of order.
ltn the accompanying drawing, which :terms a part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,-Figure 1 is a` side elevation of the statt, rib and stretcher' of an umbrella constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the relative positions ot' these parts when the umbrella is open. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation showing the positions of the stretcher and rib when the umbrella is partly open. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation showing the umbrella folded. Fig. l is a detail perspective view of the connection between the stretchers and the ribs, and Fig. 5 is a detail plan view looking from the inside, and showing the relative positions of the parts of Fig. ll, when the umbrella is open.
rlhe statt of my umbrella is composed of three telescopic sections, a lower section 1, an intermediate section 2 and an upper section 3. As shown in Fig. 1, the intermediate section 2 is adapted to slide within the lower section 1, and the upper section 3 within the intermediate section 2. To hold the sections in extended position, the lower end of the upper Section 3, and the lower end of the intermediate section Q, are each provided with a spring catch et, the heads ci which are adapted to enter slot-s la formed in the upper end ot the lower section 1, and of the intermediate section 2. A suitable handle 5 may be fastened to the lower end ot the Specification of Letters Patent.

lower section 1, and. a top or crown piece (i fastened to the upper' end oit the upper section 8.
bilidably mounted on the intermediate section 2 is the usual runner 7, to the notched flange S of which, are pivotally connected the inner ends ot the stretchers 9, to be hereinafter referred to. rthe runner 7 is held in raised position by the spring catch 4, carried by the upper section 1 ot' the statt, and is prevented from being raised too tar by means ot a flange 10, formed on the extreme upper end ci the intermediate secA tion 2.
The ribs oit the umbrella comprise two sections, an inner section 11, and an outer section 12. The inner ends oit' the inner sections 11 are pivotally connected, in the usual. manner, to a notched ring or disk 1B, lined to the upper end of the upper section 3, of the stallj oit the umbrella, immediately below the crown piece G. The inner ends ot the outer sections 12 of the ribs are each mounted in a member 111, which is tlshape in cross section, and has its outer end prow vided with downwardly extending ears 15, and its inner end slotted, as at 16a, to form a iork, between which. are pivotally connected the outer flattened ends of the stretcher-s 9, heretofore mentioned.
By referring to Figs. l and 5, it will be seen that the inner sections 11 of the ribs comprise two strips, the outer ends of which are pvotally connected on opposite sides of the members 14 to the ears 15. To hold the sections 11 and 12 of the ribs in aline ment when the umbrella is opened, the members 14 are provided with outwardly extending ears 16, which are adapted to engage the inner edges ot the strips of the inner sections 11, as shown in Fig. 1. To prevent any possibility of the outer sections 12 working out ot the members 14, owing to the tension oi the cover on the outer ends oi' said sections, when the umbrella is open, said members are provided with inturned lugs 17 which engage the lower edges of the sections 12, as shown most clearly in F ig. 5.
The operation of my invention is as folr lows: When it is desired to open the umbrella, the lower section 1 is pulled until the catch t, carried by the intermediate section 2, enters the slot 4, formed in the upper end ot said lower section 1. The runner 7 is then pulled down on the intermediate section 2 until it strikes the upper end of the lower section 1. The runner is held in this position by the hand, and the umbrella inverted to allow'the outer sections 12 of the ribs to fall, as shown in Fig. 2. The umbrella is then righted again, and the ribs completely unfolded by hand. The upper section 3 is then extended by pushing upwardly on the disk 13, and t-he runner 7 raised until it passes the catch 4, carried by the upper sect-ion 3. To close the umbrella, the catch 4 of the upper section 3 is depressed, to allow the runner to be lowered until it again engages the upper end of the lower section 1. By holding the runner in this position, and inverting the umbrella, the outer sections 12 of the ribs will drop, as shown in Fig. 2. The umbrella is then righted, and the outer sections 1:2 of the ribs folded against the inner sections 11. The spring catch 4 of the lower section 1 of the staff is then depressed, to allow the intermediate section 2 to slide into said lower section 1. Vhen the catch 4, carried by the upper section 3, reaches the flange 8 of the runner 7, said flange 8 will automatically depress said catch, and allow the upper section 3 to slide into the intermediate section 2 to completely fold the umbrella.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide a folding umbrella which is strong and durable, which may be easily operated,
and when in folded position, will be Very compact and small.
I claim:
In a folding' umbrella, the combination with inner and outer rib sections and al stretcher, the inner rib sections being in two parts; of a connection between said rib sections and the stretcher comprising a- U- shaped member fitting over the inner end of the outer rib section and fastened thereto, the inner end of said member being forked between the branches of which the stretcher extends and to which it is pivot ally connected, and the outer end of the member having downwardly extending ears to which the parts constituting the inner rib section are pivotally connected, said parts straddling the member, and stop projections extending outwardly from opposite sides of the member at the bottom thereof, said stop projections being located intermediate the ends of the member, and the parts constituting the inner rib section engaging the same for holding said section in alinement with the outer rib section.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ZYGMUNT MROCZKOVSKI.
