COMBINED CANE AND CAMP=STOOL SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,810, dated September 18, 1888.

Be it known that I, HENRY HENDRIOKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Breckenridge, in the county of Caldwell and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Cane and Camp- Stool, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a combination cane and camp-stool; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts, fully set forth hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

The object of the invention is to provide a device which,when folded,will resemble an ordinary walking stick or cane, and which,when desired, may be opened and arranged to form a very convenient camp-stool.

In the drawings, Figure l is a view of the device arranged asa cane. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same as a stool. Fig. 3 is a View of the device folded,with the cap and ferrule detached. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a camp-stool, showing a modified form of seat for the same. Fig. 5 is a view of the same, showing it closed before the cap is applied. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view showing the connection of the upper ends of the braces to the stein.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A des-' ignates the main stock or stem of the device, the lower portion of which for a considerable portion of its length is divided into three equal parts or arms, which arms are hinged atthe upper ends to the upper portion of the stem. The arms are also divided into two unequal parts, the braces or lower portions, ]3,of which are hinged to the legs or upper portions, 0, the braces being longer than the legs.

notches are adapted to be engaged over the band E,with the end of the brace bearing upwardly against the shoulder. It will be seen that when the small projection b, which is formed between the notch b and the end of the brace, is inserted between the upper edge of the band and the shoulder the extremities of the braces will be secured firmly to the main stem.

G designates the ribs of the seat, hinged at the inner ends to the upper end of the stem, so that they may be spread outwardly (in a similar manner .to an umbrella) or folded up together as a continuation of the line of the stock. The said ribs are held from separating too far by the canvas or other suitable covering, H,which is secured to the ribs, and when they are spread out forms a web or seat similar to the'ordinary camp-stool, except in shape.

Vhen the device is used' as a cane, the said ribs are drawn together and the cap I is passed down over the same, thus entirely concealing the seat and forming a handle for the cane. The inner lower edge of the cap is threaded and is adapted to be screwed on the small threaded collar K,which is secured around the stem just below the hinges which secure the ribs to the said stem.

In the modification shown in the drawings the construction of the device is exactlythe same, except with regard to the'arrangement of the seat.

G G are the ribs, (preferably eight in number,) which are hinged to the upper end of the stock and L represents thin metallic braces pivoted at the upper ends to the under sides of the said ribs, and pivoted at the lower ends to a sliding collar or thimble, M, similar to the sliding collar on an umbrella, and thus when the seat is closed the collar slides up, and the cap Lwhen placed on, covers the ribs, braces, and collar, as in the other form. The only objection had to this form of the device isthat it is heavier, and when closed up forms too much bulk atthe upper end to be covered by the cap.

In constructing the device it will be understood that the hinges,which are on the outside when the device is used as a cane,will be made as small as possible to have the requisite strength.

The device is very strong, and will be found.

very firm when used as a camp steel, as the braces, secured at the lower ends to the extremities of the legs and at the upper ends to the main stock of the stool, prevent all lateral movement,and very light and convenient when carried as a cane.

On a picnic or excursion this device will be found of inestimable value, as the owner possesses not only a very handy cane, (which is verystrong and may be used as an aid in wall;- ing,) but also a camp-stool, which may be set up in a very few seconds.

Having thus described my invention, I elaim- 1. The combination of the main stem A,legs O, hinged to the lower end thereof, braces B, hinged, respectively, to the lower ends of the legs and adapted to be turned upwardly and engaged at the extremities with the main stem, and the folding seat secured to the upper end of the stem, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of the main stem Adegs O, hinged to the lower end thereof, braces B, hinged to the extremities of the legs and having notches in the ends, band E around the stem A, and the shoulders a above the said band, the notches in the ends of the braces beint adapted to be engaged over the band E, with the extremities of the braces bearing against the shoulders ufland the seat comprising the ribs, hinged to the upper end of the stem, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination of the main stem A, legs 0-, hinged to the lower end thereof, braces B, hinged to the said legs and having the lower ends thereof exteriorly screw threaded, the ferrule D, adapted to be screwed over the ends of the braces, and the folding seat at the upper end of the stem adapted to be extended or drawn together, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

4. The combination of the stem A, legs C, hinged to the lower end thereof, braces B, hinged to the legs and having threaded lower ends, ferrule D, to be screwed on the said ends when they are drawn together, folding seat at the upper end of the stem, threaded collar K below the said seat. and the cap adapted to fit over the seat when it is folded and screw at the lower end over the collar K, all coir structed and arranged substantially as specificd.
