UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM M. SEITZINGER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
UMBRELLA RUNNER AND NOTCH.
Application filed May 18,
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, IILLIAM M. SEIT- ZINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Umbrella Runners and N otches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful umbrella runners and notches.
It further consists of other novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a partial side elevation and partial sectional view of a portion of an umbrella stick and notch with the ribs in position. Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevation and partial sectional view of a portion of an umbrella stick with the runner in section and showing stretchers in position. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of a portion of an umbrella stick and notch showing the slots in the notch. Fig. 4 represents a plan view of a notch with the ring removed with some of the ribs in position and showing a portion of the notch broken away. Fig. 5 represents a partial elevation and partial sectional view of a portion of a rib or stretcher showing a slightly different form of pin. Fig. 6 represents an elevation of a split ring employed.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, I have found in practice that in the connecting of the umbrella ribs or stretchers with the runner or the notch that it is extremely difficult to place the same in position to receive the wire which is used to lock the parts together and that in the form of ribs or stretchers which are provided with .a ball on the end for engagement With the runners or notches that special forms of the latter must be used.
In the drawings I have shown a construction for carrying out my invention, but it will be evident that changes may be made therein and other instrumentalities employed which come within the scope of my invention and I do not, therefore7 desire to be limited in every instance to the exact form herein shown and described.
1 designates a notch which is adapted to be secured to the umbrella stick 2 in any suitable or desired manner, said notch being of the usual form and having the offset portion 3 with the slots 4 therein at suitable intervals and having the inturned lips 5. It
Specification of Letters Patent.

will be understood from the drawings, that the edges of thel said lips are adapted to be seated adjacent the stick 2 when the notch is in position thereon.
6 designates the ribs which are formed in the usual manner similar to the paragon but through the upper end thereof, I pass a pin 7 which projects from either side of the flattened portion 8 of the ribs which pins are adapted to be seated in the offset ortion 3 of the notch and engage with the wills thereof, when the flattened portion 8 of the ribs are seated in the recess 4 in the said offset 8, it being understood that the ribs are first placed in position with respect to the notch 3, as seen in Fig. 4, before the notch is placed upon the stick v2 and that as soon as the notch is placed on said stick, the ends of the ribs are prevented from disengagement from the notch as will be evident.
I construct the stretchers 9 in the same manner as described with respect to the ribs providing the pins 7 on the flattened portions of the stretchers and the said pins are seated in the offset 10 of the notch of the runner 11, said notch being provided with the slots 12 as usual. Since the runner is to move upon the stick 2, as the umbrella is opened and closed, I have provided a split ring or collar 13 which is provided with the lip 14 at its lower end and which ring or collar is adapted to beinserted between the stick 2 and the runner 11, and said lip 14, when the parts are in proper position, being adapted to be seated in the groove 15 formed on the inner.wall of the runner 11 as best understood from Fig. 2, it being seen, in this manner, that the ends of the stretchers are prevented from coming in contact with the stick 2 and at the same time the sleeve prevents the escape of the stretchers from the slots 12 of the runner, it being understood that in order to remove the stretchers should any of them break, it is only necessary to pull out the sleeve 13 which can be done by proper pull thereon after which the stretchers can be inserted in position.
In the construction shown in Fig. 6, I have shown the stretcher or rib 16 provided with an opening therethrough in which I insert a pin 17 and I provide or form the heads 18 on opposite sides-of the stretcher in order to prevent the displacement of the pin 17 from the l pin 17 are formed beveled or inclined so as to conform to the curve oli' the inner wall of the runner or notch with Which the heads 18 are adapted to contact, so that a more joint is formed between them.
It will be understood that the construction shown,` described and claimed in the present application is adapted for use either on the notch or runner and that while I have claimed the same partly for the notch and partly for the runner, it will be understood that the same applies equally well to the construction oi' either the notch or the runner, although the claims may not speciiically refer to the one or the other.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, a notched runner having slots therein, stretchers movable in said slots, the pins passing through said stretchers and seated in said runnerl said runner' having an interior groove, a ring adapted to be seated between said run'- ner and stick when in position, and means on said ring adapted to engage with and be seated in said groove in saidrunner.
2. In a device of the character described,
perfect an umbrella stick, a runner thereon and having slots therein, stretchers movable in said slots, pins assing through said stretchers and seated 1n said runner, and a ring within said runner for preventing the removal of said stretchers from said slots.
3. In a device of the character described, an umbrella stick, a runner thereon, and having slots therein, stretchers movable in said slots, pins passing through said stretchers and seated in said runner, and a split ring Within said runner adapted to engage therewith to prevent the removal of the stretchers from the notch.
4. In a device of the character described, an umbrella stick, a runner thereon, and having slots therein, stretchers movable in said slots, pins passing through said stretchers and seated in said runner, the latter having an interior groove, and a split ring adapted to be seated between said runner and stick, and a lip on said ring adapted to engage with and be seated in said groove in said runner.
