OF ONE HALE TO CHARLES M. RHODES, OF BRIDGEPORT, OHIO.
SPINNING-TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 310,574, dated January 13, 1885. Application filed June 19, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHAS. H. FRY, J r., a resident of \Vheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chil drens Spinning-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingzdrawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improve- 1 ments in gyroscopic tops, which are swiveled to the end of the spinning-cord in such manner that the cord maybe wrapped around the lower portion and the top put in motion by throwing it out of the hand while holding on to the cord, so that it will spin upon the swiveled end of the cord in various positions, after the manner of a gyroscope; and my invention has for its objects, first, to provide for cheaply constructing the top, and, second,
the swiveled connection, as more fully hereinafter specified.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of the top as it appears in motion, and Fig. 2 represents a sectional view, show- 0 ing its construction in detail.
The letter A indicates the body of the top, which may be of the ordinary or any approved shape. The said body is preferably constructed of glass, and hollow; but it may 3 5 be made of any other suitable materialsuch as earthenware, metal, or the like and solid, if found convenient. The lower end of the top is provided with the usual peg, B, which may be formed with the body of the top.
The upper end of the top is formed with a neck, 0, which is screw-threaded externally for the reception of a screw-cap, D, which is constructed, preferably, of stamped or struckup metal, and which has a central aperture,
5 E, into which is fitted loosely a short sleeve, F, having its inner and outer edge upset, so
as to form a rim on each side, which confines it in place, but allows the cap to freely rotate. The sleeve has passed through it the spinningcord G, which is knotted at its inner end, so
that it will not pullout, and will permit the body of the top to rotate freely when suspended by the cord.
In order to make the top hum or sing while in rotation, a recess or projection, H, is pro- 5 a vided at one side. A hole can be made through the body of the top to accomplish the same purpose.
The operation of my improved toy is as follows: The spinning-cord is carried down to and can be It is obvious that the metal cap used for 0 connecting the cord to the top can be secured with cement to the neck of the top, instead of being fastened by a screw-thread connection, and such form of construction I consider a modification within the scope of my inven- 7 tion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gyroscopic top, the combination,
with the body having a screw-threaded neck at its upper end, of the screw-threaded cap adapted to fit thereon, and having a central opening, and the sleeve swiveled therein, in
which the spinning-cord is held, substantially as specified.
2. A gyroscopic top constructed of glass or earthenware, having an externally-screwthreaded neck, and a screw-threaded cap fitting thereon, and an opening in which is swiveled the end of a spinningcord, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereby affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. FRY, JR.
