Description
Dec. 26, 1950 J. T. RADOVAN SPINNING TOP WITH ATTACHED FLEXIBLE BALL CHAIN MEMBER FiledAug. 15. 1948 INVENTOR. JOJEPH 2r 2400px.
Patented Dec. 26, 1950 SPINNING TOP WITH ATTACHED FLEXIBLE BALL CHAIN MEMBER Joseph T. Radovan, Long Island City, N. Y.
Application August 13, 1948, Serial No. 44,050
2 Claims.
This invention relates to toy tops.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a connection of a cord or line with the top such that the top can be rotated with respect to the end of the cord and so that when the top has completed its spinning action, it can be lifted from the surface without having to bend over and likewise by the use of this cord control of the top can be had so as to prevent the same from entering spaces where it would be hard to retrieve the same.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a top with a cord connected to the same wherein the connection is of simple construction, permits rotation of the top free of the cord, inexpensive to manufacture and eflicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in com nection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the top having the cord connected thereto and embodying the features of the present invention, and with the cord retained in the hand of the boy who has operated the top.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the top, enlarged, and of the cord connected thereto.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, in elevation, taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the retaining member for the top and its connection with the cord wherein the cord being connected to a ball chain which is in. turn connected to the top body by the retaining member.
Referring now to the figures, Ill represents a top body having a small supporting point I! on which the spinning action of the top is effected. In the top of the body is an opening l2 adapted to receive a fastening element It of a ball chain M. The opposite end of the ball chain M has a fastening element 55 to which cord 16 of sufficient length to reach the boys hand, is attached. The cord It is knotted as indicated at H to fit within the fastener [5. The opposite end of the cord It may also be knotted as indicated at it.
In order to retain the fastener [3 within the opening l2, there is provided a retaining element or ferrule 19, Fig. 4. This ferrule has a central opening 29 and is dished so that its side flanges 2| fit over an upwardly extending projection 22 on the top of the body It]. The flange 2! has depending projections 23 adapted to enter the body ill so that the ferrule will be fixed thereupon and against vertical displacement.
The diameter of the hole Ell is such that the fastener element 22 will be retained within the ferrule.
The top can be used in the usual manner by winding the cord it about the same. Upon a pull of the cord, the top will be spun and the cord will be made free of the top body. The top body will revolve freely on the ball chain. The fastener it lies free in the opening I2 and it too may revolve within the opening. With the cord I6, the top when it comes to rest or at any other time, can be lifted by the cord It without having to bend for it. The top can be sold free of the cord and the cord simply inserted within the'fastener l3, the cord being supplied by the user.
It should now be apparent that there has been provided a control cord for a top body which does not interfere with the operation of the top once it had been started by the cord and whereby the top can be kept from moving to places where it would be hard to retrieve the same.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of my invention, what is claimed is:
l. A spinning top comprising a top body, said top body having a pointed end upon which the body is rotated, said top body having an opening in the upper end, a raised ortion about the opening, a flexible ball chain, a retaining member having a depending flange adapted to surround the raised portion about the opening, said retaining element having a central opening for rotatably receiving and retaining the ball chain, said retaining member having depending projections extending into the top body for fixing the same thereto, a fastener element on the outer end of the ball chain, and a cord detachably connected to the fastener element.
2. A spinning top comprising a fibrous body having a pointed end upon which the body is rotated; a raised boss formed centrally upon the top of said body; an upwardly opening bore formed in the top of said body; a flexible ball chain member having a fastener element secured to each of the opposite ends thereof; and a retainer member including an apertured disc through which said chain rotatably extends and adapted to retain one of said fastener elements, a depending annular flange formed on said disc for engagement over said boss with said one of 4 UNITED STATES PATENTS said fastener elements being loosely disposed in Number Name Date said bore, and toothed projections on said flange 310 574 Fry Jan 13 1885 extending into said fibrous body for rotatably 425368 Cole i. 1890 securing said chain to said body. 5 761430 az y 31, 1904 JOSEPH 1,966,895 Kuhns July 17, 1934 2,449,405 Mordan Sept. 14, 1948 FOREIGN PATENTS.
