ACCESSORY DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING TWO ROTATABLE TYPE TOYS Fi e Sept. 18, 2 3| 3O 29 8 l7 w INVEN MAx J. RUDERI aymfiadugw FIG 3 ATTORNEY-S United States Patent M 3,136,551 ACCESSORY DEVICE FOR SUPPURTING TWO ROTATABLE TYPE TGYS Max .1. Raider-fan, 545 Hanley, 'Los Angeles 49, Calif. Filed Sept. 18, 1962, Ser. No. 224,483 4 Claims. (Cl. 273-442) This invention relates generally to an accessory device for toys and more particularly to a novel accessory item designed to support one or more rotatable type toys operable by strings.
In my co-pending patent application Serial No. 219,972, filed August 28, 1962, for Accessory for Amusement Device, there is disclosed a holding device for supporting a rotatable toy of the type comprising a pair of disc-shaped members connected by a shaft about which one end of a string is coupled. These toys are known as Yo-Yos. The holding device set forth in said co-pending application also serves the function of supporting the Yo-Yo in a position such that it may be manually spun about a stationary axis and certain markings on the exterior surface of the Yo-Yo designated by pointer means.
In another of my co-pending applications Serial No. 222,776, filed September 11, 1962, for Accessory for a Top, there is disclosed a different type of holding device for supporting a rotatable type toy in the form of a top. This device also includes means for supporting a string for operating the top and supporting an extra tip for the top.
With the teachings of the foregoing co-pending applications in mind, it is a primary object of this invention to provide a combined accessory device for simultaneously supporting both types of the above-mentioned toys.
More particularly, it is :an object to provide an accessory device which will support a top and a Yo-Yo in a convenient manner so that the same may readily be carried about by a user.
Another object is to provide an accessory device of the foregoing type which will also serve additional functions such as provide a stand upon which the Yo-Yo may be spun about a stationary axis so that various other type games may be played.
Still another important object of this invention is to provide an accessory device for at least two toys which may be extremely economically manufactured.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a novel accessory device for two toys incorporating many of the features and advantages of the accessory devices described in the above-mentioned co-pending patent applications.
Briefly, these and other objects and advantages of this invention are attained by providing an accessory device in the form of a single integral stamping including an internal cutout area adapted to:support a top and an external concave curved portion adapted to support a Yo-Yo. The stamping further includes a second exterior concave curved portion at a higher level than the first mentioned portion for supporting the shaft of the Yo-Yo to enable the same to be spun about a stationary axis. The stamping also includes an opening adjacent its lower edge adapted to receive an elongated member such as a pencil which will project normally from the plane of the stamping. The lower edge and pencil may then rest on a flat horizontal plane with the stamping lying in a substantially vertical plane.
As in the case of the accessory devices described in the above-mentioned co-pending applications, the stamping of this invention also includes a single hook means enabling ready attachment of the stamping to a portion of a persons clothes so that both the top and the Yo-Yo may be conveniently carried about simultaneously.
A better understanding of the invention will be had 3,136,551 Patented June 9, 1964 by now referring to a preferred embodiment thereof as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view illustrating the accessory device of this invention supporting both a top and a Yo-Yo;
FIGURE 2 is another front elevational view illustrating the manner in which the accessory device may be employed with the Yo-Yo for playing other games; and,
FIGURE 3 is an end elevational view of the accessory device shown in FIGURE 2.
Referring first to FIGURE 1, the accessory device comprises a single integral stamping 10 which may constitute a plastic material. As shown, this stamping includes first and second inwardly curved edges 11 and 12 defining a central cutout area. These edges extend upwardly to terminate at their upper ends in an apex 13 and at their lower ends in an extending tongue 14 projecting inwardly into the cutout area. The tongue 14 is adapted to be received within a cavity 15 in the base of a top 16 for supporting the top within the cutout area. The upper end or tip 17 of the top fits within the apex portion 13 of the cutout as shown. At least a portion of the first and second curved edges 11 and 12 conform to diametrically opposite exterior surface portions of the top.
Immediately below the major cutout area of the stamping, there is provided an opening 18 for receiving an extna spinning tip 19. p
The string for rotating the top is adapted to be wound about first notch means in the form of notches 20 and 21 on opposite exterior sides of the stamping adjacent the upper exterior surface portions of the top 12 and thus help in holding the top within the cutout area.
The upper end of the stamping includes hook means 23 for supporting the same to a portion of a persons clothes.
In accordance with an important feature of this invention, the same integral stamping 10 also includes a first concave exterior curved portion 24 defining a cradle for a Yo-Yo 25. Also defined is a second concave curved portion 26 at a higher level than the cradle portion 24 adapted to seat the shaft inter-connecting the disc-shaped members defining the Yo-Yo so that the same may be spun about a stationary axis, all as will become clearer when FIGURES 2 and 3 are described. Notch means 27 and 28 are provided about which a string 29 for the Yo- Yo 25 is adapted to be wound as shown.
In the particular embodiment illustrated in FIGURE 1, the hook shaped member 23 is threaded through a stay 30 for a persons belt 31 so that the stamping will suspend the top and Yo-Yo as shown for easy carrying about of these toys.
Referring now to FIGURES 2 and 3, the top 12 is shown removed from the stamping so that the tongue portion 14 is clearly visible. Further, the extra spinning tip 18 has been removed from the opening 19 for use with the top 12 should the tip supplied with the top become damaged.
Adjacent the bottom edge of the stamping, there is provided an opening 32 for receiving an elongated member such as a pencil 33. With particular reference to FIG- URE 3, it will be noted that this member extends normally from the plane of the stamping-when inserted within the opening 32 so that it will serve to support the stamping in a substantially vertical plane when resting on a fiat horizontal surface.
In the position illustrated in FIGURES 2 and 3, the Yo-Yo 25 may be removed from the cradle 24 and in.- serted on the second concave curved portion 26 for spinning about a stationary axis as described heretofore.
3 With particular reference to FIGURE 3, it will be noted that the Yo-Yo 25 includes first and second disc-shaped members 2511 and 25b connected together by a central shaft 250. This central shaft 25c fits within the second concave curved portion 26 as clearly shown so that the entire Yo-Yo may be spunmanually.
In the embodiment chosen for illustrative purposes, the disc-shaped member 25a includes markings in the form of numbers extending about the exterior periphery of the member. Further, as a consequence of the design of the stamping, the end portion 23' of the hook 23 serves the additional function of a pointer juxtaposed the markings on the Yo-Yo 25. Thus, when the Yo-Yo 25 is spun in the curved cutout portion 26, it will come to rest with the pointer 23" designating one of the markings. Accordingly, various ditferent types of games may be played wherein any one of several markings is arbitrarily designated.
In operation and use of the device, when it is desired to simply carry toys such as the top and Yo-Yo, the top may first be inserted by having the tongue 14 received within the cavity 15 in the base of the top, and the apex portion received in the apex 13 of the stamping. The top string 22 is then wound about the notches 2d and 21 as shown in FIGURE 1 to straddle the uper portion of the top so that the sameis securely held within the cutout of the stamping.
The Yo-Yo 25 may then be inserted in the cradle 24 as shown, and since the opposite disc-shaped members extend downwardly on opposite sides of the cradle portion, it'will be properly retained when the stamping is in the upright position. The Yo-Yo string 29 may then be wound about the other notches 27 and 28. By providing two sets of notches as shown, the top may be removed independently of the Yo-Yo or the Yo-Yo may be removed independently of the top. e
The hook 23 may then be secured to the edge of a persons pocket or through one of the stays such as the stay 30 for the persons belt. When itis desired to play with either toy, either one may be removed. Further, when it is desired to play other games in which various actions are determined by any one of several markings designated by the pointer 23', any suitable elongated member such as i the pencil 33 may be inserted within the opening 32 to support the stamping and the Yo-Yo then positioned as shown in FIGURES 2 and 3 and rotated as described.
From the foregoing description, it will thus be evident that the present invention hasprovided a greatly improved accessory device in whichtwo toys may simultaneously be supported for easy transportation. Since the stamping itself constitutes a single integral member, it may be extremely economically manufactured.
While only the one particular embodiment has been shown and described in conjunction with a top and a Yo-Yo, various minor changes that fall clearly within the scope and spirit of this invention willoccur to those skilled in the art. The accessory device for dual toys is therefore not to be thought of as limited to the exact construction shown merely for illustrative purposes.
