NASAL IRRIGATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1915.
Application filed April 3, 1914. Serial No. 829,343.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN H. WV. MOELLERING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nasal Irrigators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in nasal irrigators.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a very simple form of nasal irrigator manufactured out of glass or the like in one piece and provided with a special nozzle for the purposes to be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved nasal irrigator. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the nozzle. Fig. 3 shows a general view of the nasal irrigator inserted in a nostril of a head.
My improved nasal irrigator A is made preferably of glass and formed in one piece. The upper part or body portion B is constructed in a shape somewhat similar to that of a bottle. having a neck C, for the purpose of providing a means whereby the body portion can be closed like any ordinary bottle. The lower end of the body portion A is gradually tapered into a hook D, ter1ninating in a nozzle E and being provided with a small aperture F in this end.
The nozzle E is peculiarly shaped, having in its medial portion an annular groove G for the reception of a rubber ring H, for the purpose of engaging the nostril when the nozzle E is inserted therein, thereby providing a means for closing the said nostril.
In using the irrigator, any kind of a funnel or the like may be employed to fill the same with the desired solution and at the same time the finger is pressed over the aperture E, to close the same. After the instrument is filled the irrigator neck C may be closed with a cork or the like and the irrigator inserted into the nostril with the head in upright position.
The rubber ring H carried by the nozzle will close the nostril through its flexibility and will not permit of any overflow of the solution from the nostril when the nozzle is so inserted.
By removing the cork from the irrigator the overflow begins in one nostril and the circulation of solution passes in the usual way out of the other nostril. When not in use the irrigator may be hung up by means of the hook D, until further use thereof is desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A device such as described comprising a body portion, a hook shaped extension formed upon the lower end thereof, an enlarged nozzle formed upon the hook shaped extension, said nozzle having an opening in communication with the body through said hook shaped extension, said nozzle having an annular groove formed therein at right angles to the opening in said nozzle and intermediate the ends of the latter, the sides of said nozzle tapering in opposite directions from the groove, and a flexible ring disposed in said groove to engage the nostril of the user, for supporting the device within said nostril and in front of one eye.
In testimony whereof I hereby aiilX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTIAN H. W. MOELLERING.
