Description

NiTED STATES.
JAMES FRANKLIN BARRINGER, OF BENNETTSVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA.
BROOM-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,214, dated January 12, 1886.
I Application filed March 14, 1885. Serial No. 158,929. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, JAMEs FRANKLIN BAR- RINGER, of Bennettsville, in the county of Marlborough and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Broom- Holder, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be first described, and then specifically set forth in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front View of my improved broom holder, parts being broken out and others in section. Fig. 2 is aside view of the same, parts being broken out and parts in section, on the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 00 a: of Fig. 1.
A hollow piece, A, having a semicircular or invertedU-shaped crosssection, is provided with a socket, B, for receiving the lower end of a handle-rod, O. Cross-pieces D are secured on the ends of the piece A, and are slightly curved outward at their middles. The bottom cross-piece of a U-shaped rod, E, is passed through the groove in the piece A, and its ends are secured to a bar, F, above the top of and parallelwith the piece A; A screw, G, is passed through a threaded aperture in the middle of the bar F, and its lower end is held in the top of the piece A in such a manner that the screw can turn on its longitudinal axes, but cannot travel lengthwise. An eye, H, for receiving a key, &c., is formed on the upper end of the screw. A U-shaped strip, J, is placed on the inner or bottom J, so as to hang or project down at the sides of the same, and then the cross piece of the rod E, the strips J, and the middle parts of the straws or rattans K are pulled up into the hollow piece A by turning the screw G, and
are thus clamped firmly and securely in the said piece A and form a broom.
In place of holding broom-straw or rattan, 8m, in the broom holder, bagging, cotton waste, pieces of rope, &c., can be clamped in the same to form a mop.
The piece J prevents the rod E from cutting the straws, canes, &c.
The broom-straws, rattan, bagging, ropes, 850., can easily be removed and replaced by others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the inverted-U-shaped plate A, having outward-curved cross-pieces D at its ends, the U-shaped rod E, having its arms extending up between the cross-pieces D and the ends of plate A, the cross-bar F, to which the ends of the rod E are secured, said cross -bar having a central screw-threaded aperture, and the screw G, passed through the threaded aperture in the cross-bar F, and
swiveled in the central part of the plate A, substantially as set forth.
JAMES FRANK. BARRINGER. Witnesses:
I. P. MEEKINs, I. A. GHIsHoLM.
