EDWIN B. GAZE, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
UMBRELLA OR PARASOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,273, dated September 3, 1889.
Application filed July 11, 1887- serial No. 243,940.
(No model.) Patented in England June 20,1885, No. 1,558, and September 17, 1886,110. 11,814.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN BOWYER GAZE,
a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at the city of London, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Umbrellas and Parasols, (for which patents have been granted me in Great Britain dated June 20, 1885, No. 7,553, and September 17, 1886, No. 11,814,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention refers to improvements in the construction of umbrellas and parasols having removable covers, whereby the operation of covering and re-covering the umbrella or parasol is rendered extremely simple and rapid. I
My invention consists, principally, in a sheet-metal clip which in cross-section is of U shape and the ends are oblique, the acute angle at one end being much less than at the other end. These sheet-metal clips are open between the edges and are perforated with two or more holes along the middle portion, and said clips are sewed to the covering fabric of the umbrella or parasol. In applying the covering to the umbrella or parasol these clips are sprung over the ribs and secure the cover at points between the center of the cover at the stick and the ends of the ribs. I also employ devices for securing the central part of the cover around the stick and to the exterior ends of the ribs, which devices are herein more perfectly described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of portions of an umbrella-frame,- showing the jointing of the rib with the stick and stretcher, and also the end of the rib provided with the cap. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section showing the means I employ for securing the covering at its central part. Fig. 3 is an enlarged View of the end of the rib, showing the cap applied thereto. Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate the end of the rib and the cap separated. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the clip I employ to secure the cover to the rib between the end or tip and the stick, which clip constitutes the principal featureof my invention and Fig. 7 is a cross section of the clip.
A represents the stick of the umbrella or parasol.
A represents one of the ribs; A one of the stretchers.
B represents the notched piece, and B its screw-threaded sleeve, which are formed together and secured to the stick.
O represents the dome-shaped cap, inter nally screw-threaded and adapted to screw upon the sleeve 13', and B C are washers between the notch-piece B and the dome-cap G, and the fabric of the umbrella-cover at its central part is to be secured between. these Washers and clamped by screwing down the dome-cap O.
E represents a cap having a tip E a socket at E, and holes at E Caps of this character are to be sewed to the cover at the ends of the seams, and their sockets at E are adapted to receive the ends of the ribs A in the act of placing the cover upon the frame of the umbrella or parasol.
Umbrella or parasol covers can be made of different sizes and different materials, the sizes corresponding with the different sizes or established lengths of frames.
The essential feature of my invention con; sists in the sheet-metal clip D. (Shown in Figs.
1 and 6.) This sheet-metal clip is of inverted- U shape in cross-section and the ends are oblique, the acute angle at one end being less than the acute angle at the other end. These clips are open along their under edges, the metal of the edges being bent toward each other at 3 almost at right angles to the surfaces of the sides, and the middle part of each clip is perforated with holes at 4,so that it may be sewed or otherwise secured to the fabric of the cover, and it is desirable to secure these clips to the fabric of the cover in such a way that the most acute angled end of the clip will pointtoward the ends of the cover and away from the center in the position shown in Fig. 1. p
In placing the cover upon the frame of the umbrella or parasol after the central portion is secured by the cap 0 the cover is secured at intermediate points by springing the clips D over the ribs A, and this is done byasimple pushing action, and the ends of the cover Ioo are afterward secured by slipping the caps E upon the ends of the ribs. To remove the cover from the frame after the caps E have been pulled off the ribs, the finger-nail is inserted in succession beneath the projecting ends 5 of the clips D at the most acute angle, Where the end of each clip can be easily and readily raised, and when raised the portion 6 Will bear upon the rib and act as a fulcrum in springing the clips from off the ribs. This construction and the leverage resulting therefrom Will cause the clips to readily yield in springing the same off the ribs of the umbrella.
I claim as my invention In the construction of umbrellas and para; sols, the combination, with the cover and ribs, of sheet-metal clips D, of inverted-U shape in cross-section and having oblique ends, the angle at one end being less than at the other end to form projecting points 5, there being holes for the sewing that unites the clips to the umbrella or parasol cover, said clips being adapted to be sprung over the umbrella-ribs and to be removed therefrom by raising the projecting points and springing said clips oit, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
