REMOVABLE UMBRELLA-COVER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LUTHER O. BARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Andrew, in the county of Barbour, State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Umbrella-Covers' and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to umbrellas of that general class having detachable covers, and has for its object to provide a novel form of cover that may be attached to an umbrella frame without wrinkling or distortion during the operation.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification :Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through an umbrella and cover constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the cover showing the novel rib engaging means. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of one of the rib tips showing the sleeve in position thereon for permitting the separate tips carried by the cover being attached without distortion of the cover.

The reference character 10 designates an umbrella stick having its tip end threaded as shown at 11 and being equipped with an ordinary notch 12 adjacent to its threaded tip. Threading on the tip of the stick is a cap 13 having one end provided with an ordinary ferrule 14. Pivoted in the notch 12 is a plurality of ribs 15, each rib terminating in an enlarged cylindrical threaded extension 16. A threaded sleeve 17 threads on each rib tip 16.

The cover 18 comprising the subject matter of this invention is formed of the usual triangular strips 19 of material, the meeting edges of which overlap and are connected together by a line of stitching, thus forming seams 20 which are turned inward and ex tend along the umbrella ribs. The cover is provided with a centrally located circular opening through which is inserted a grooved ring 21, the edges of the circular opening being engaged in the groove of the ring and fastened thereto by a cord or similar fastening means 22. This ring bears with its bottom face against the notch upon the umbrella stick and presents a bearing surface at its top face for the cap 13 and ferrule 14. Thus Specification of Letters Patent.

the cover is not mutilated by either the cap or ferrule when the umbrella is being opened or closed.

For fastening the intermediate portions of the cover to the ribs through the intermediate portion of each seam a flexible tab 23 is engaged. These tabs are preferably formed from some flexible metal, such as tin or the like and are suflicient in length to permit of their terminals being looped in opposite directions around the ribs, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. In removing the umbrella cover, the terminals of the tabs are pried out with the finger nails and then unwound until the tabs become entirely disengaged from the ribs.

Fixed to the marginal edges of the cover are a plurality of separate tips 24:, each tip comprising a shank 25 equipped with an eye 26 through which a loop of thread 27 may be passed to secure the tipto the cover. The shank is provided remote from the eye with an enlarged cylindrical threaded extension 28 which is approximately the same in size as the threaded extension 16 of the adjacent rib and is adapted to abut with its circular end face the circular end face of the latter.

In mounting the cover, the ring is s5 over the threaded tip of the stick and the cap then screwed down into engagement with the ring. The sleeves 17 of the ribs are now retracted upon the ribs until the ends of the enlarged threaded extensions 16 of the ribs protrude slightly beyond the ends of the sleeves. The threaded extensions 28 of the separate tips carried by the cover are now placed in. abutting contact with the extensions upon the ribs and the sleeves advanced so as to engage both the extensions of the separate tips and ribs. Itis evident in thus mounting the cover that the separate tips carried by the cover are not rotated in any manner so that the cover is mounted without distortion or wrinkling.

What is claimed is 1. An umbrella comprising a stick, a series of ribs surrounding said stick and each terminating in an enlarged exteriorly threaded extension, a coupling sleeve threading on each extension, a cover stretched over said ribs and having a plurality of separate tips attached adjacent to its marginal edges, each tip having an enlarged exteriorly threaded extension engaged in said coupling sleeve.
