To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM BERGFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at 208 E. 27th St, in the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Covers for Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and 1mproved removable and replaceable cover for an umbrella.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a cover which can be quickly and conveniently removed or replaced.

Another object of my invention is to pro vide a cover which shall be durable and which will have the same appearance as the ordinary cover when it is in place.

Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof.

Fig. 4 is an elevation partially in section showing the connection between the stick or rod of the umbrella and the bottom of the cover.

Fig. 5 is a side view partially in section showing the clip connections between the fabric cover and the ribs of the umbrella.

The cover 2 of the umbrella is mounted upon the stick or rod 3 having the handle 1.

The framework of the umbrella is made up of a series of ribs 4 secured to the rod of the umbrella in the usual manner, which is not shown in the drawings, as this in itself is very well known to the art.

The cover 2 of the umbrella which is made of any suitable material, such as cotton, silk or the like, is provided. with an outer head 8 and an inner head 9 secured by fastening means 16. The said heads are tapered, the

larger end of the head 9 has the cover 2 secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by an adhesive, and is adapted to embrace the crown, the adjacent ends of the two heads being overlapped, and a ferrule or the like 9 is arranged upon the inner face of the head and receives the securing means, as seen in Fig. 4. The free end of the head 8 snugly embraces the stick 3.

he cover 2 is also provided with clips 10 on the inner fold lines thereof, which are adjacent to the ribs of the umbrella when the parts are assembled.

The clips 10 are made of metal blanks, of the kind shown in Fig. 7, perforated parts 12 being sewed to the cover 2 and the clip parts 10 being bent up at right angles thereto. The tops of the inner folds of the umbrella are gathered and sewed firmly around caps 6 which are recessed to receive the tops 5 of the ribs 4 as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.

The parts are so dimensioned that when the umbrella is in its closed position, the bottom of the cover can be slipped over the point of the stick 3, the clips. 10 can be caused to engage the ribs 4, and the caps 6 can be caused to engagethe ribs 4, without requirin any substantial bending of the ribs. It is therefore very easy to quickly remove or replace the cover 2. V

In operation, the points bear against the metal caps 6 so that this part of the cover does not wear out and the removable umbrella presents the same neat appearance as the well known umbrella made in the ordinary manner.

I claim 7 An umbrella cover of pliable material, and a head therefor composed of an inner and an outer tapered member with their adjacent enda overlapped with the cover securedto the inner member and the outer member adapted to closely embrace the umbrella stick, means securing said overlapped ends together, and a reinforcing ferrule upon the inner face of the inner member and receiving the said securing means.
