To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, LEVIN LAKE, a oitize of the United States, residing at Baltimore, Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in U mbrella-Covers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The herein described invention relates to that class of umbrellas in which the cloth covering is made removable and detachable at with its necessary attaching devices,-which devices are of such design as to allow the" cover to be readily applied to the umbrella frame, and when so applied to remain firmly thereon, making as neat a fit of the covering as one permanently attached.

The prime object of theinvention has been to provide a clip which can be attached to the points of the cover in such a manner as to bring the tension of the cover on the edges and radial seams when the umbrella is in its raised position, while the cap portion of the clip is so formed as to be sprung slightly open to receive the head on the end of the ribs and firmly hold the same therein.

It has been the object further to provide a cap to which the cover is attached at the point where the stick of the umbrella projects through, which cap is so constructed as to cause it to adjust itself to the stick, thereby making a snug fit at this point and preventing any leakage.

The invention, therefore, consists in an at t achable cover for umbrellas, having the clips by which it is held on the frame or ribs, formed with a slotted or slit cap portion whereby to cause the heads of the ribs to be sprung therein; and a'lower portion so formed as to allow a firm attachment of the clip to the covering.

The invention further consists in the attachable cover provided with the attaching clips around the edges thereof, and an and j ustable spring cap adapted to fit about the stick at the point of its projection through.

. The invention further consists in certain otherjnovel features and the construction and Qarra'ingement of parts, all as hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings in which my ,invention is fully illustrated, Figure 1, is a perspective view of an umbrella provided with the attachable covering, one of the clips being shown as removed fromthe end of one ofthe ribs. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the adjustable spring cap. Fig. 3, is a perspective' view of the attaching clip. Fig. 4, is a top View of the clip with its clover leaf extension flattened out to show the form of the. blank from which the clip is formed. Fig. 5, is a view of a section of the umbrella covering, showing the manner in which the same is attached to the clip in order to bring the tension on the edges and radial seams.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A, indicates the cloth covering of the umbrella .which, as before stated, is attachable and refmovable at will. This cover is designed to :be in itself a complete article of merchandise, and to take the place of the permanent cov- Qering when the same is old or worn out, or for other reasons undesirable.

The handle B, stick 0, and ribsD, represent the old umbrella which has been deprived of its permanent covering, and the attachable cover A, is therefore provided with the necessary attaching devices constructed with relation to the frame of the umbrell'a so that it can be readily applied there-. to. At the points of the cover A, where attachment is made to the end of the ribs, are provided the clips E, which consist of a cap portion a, and an attaching portion 17. The cap portion of the clip is round on its top and cylindrical in general form, and is preferably made by. being spun into its hollow form from the metal of whichit is composed. The cap is slightly contracted near its entrance, making it at this point of slightly smaller diameter thanthe heads c,.on the ends of the ribs. A slit or slot d, is formed longitudinally in the cap, terminating in a circular opening e, which bifurcates the said cap a, and permits it to be sprung open to receive the head 0, on the rib, and to close firmly about the same.

Extending from one side of the cap portion is the attaching extension I), formed integral therewith, which extension is threelobed or in the form of a clover leaf, each of the three lobes f, being perforated, and the whole extension curved to partially embrace the rib and allow the fastening of the cover thereto in as neat a manner as possible. The form of the extension I), enters very materially into the practical service of the cover, as by the three lobes shown, with their respective perforations, the cover is attached at three independent points (best shown in Fig. 5), the lower or central lobe being stitched to the radial seams g, while the side lobes are stitched or otherwise attached to the hemmed edges h, on each side of the point of the cover,respectively, and thus the tension of the cover when the umbrella is raised will be brought, in the main, onto these seams and edges which are of the reinforced parts of the cloth and hence capable of taking the greatest strain.

The cap F, to which the central openingof the cover A, is attached to provide a reinforced passage for the stick 0, to extend through, is in general form that of aring, and 1s constructed of spring sheet metal with its ends overlapping each other, and held together by means of a rivet 2', made secure in the inner lap, and working back and forth within certain limits within the slot j, formed in the outer lap. The opening of the cap is normally contracted, but allows of, expansion suflicient to fit any of the various sizes of sticks commonly used in umbrellas, and by its expansion and elastic nature it readily adjusts itself to the stick, and so efficiently as to prevent the joint from admitting water. The cap is secured to the cover by means of the perforations 70, formed around the top of same, and the cover thus provided with the cap and attaching clips is designed to be in itself an independent article of sale to meet the demand for an attachable cover which can be readily substituted for thepermanent covering, as well as to make it possible to use difierent grades of covers on the same stick and frame as occasion may require, or as it may be found desirable.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A removable elastic clip for umbrella covers comprising a cap portion and an attaching extension for permanently attaching the same to the cover, the said cap portion being slit longitudinally thereof, and the said slit provided with an enlargement at its inner end, whereby the cap is adapted to be sprung open to admit the head of the rib, substantially as described.

2. A removable elastic clip for an umbrella cover comprising the cap portion and the attaching extension, the said cap portion being formed with a slightly contracted entrance and slit longitudinally thereof, substantially as described, whereby the entrance of thepcap is adapted to be enlarged to admit the head of the rib and to close aboutthe same.

3. A detachable cover for umbrellas pro: vided at its central aperture, whereiattachment is made to the stick, witha contractible cap formed of sheet metal having its ends overlapping each other, substantially asdescribed, whereby it is adapted to enlarge its circumference to admitdilferentsized sticks and to normally contract about the same, as set forth.

4:. An umbrella cover provided witha spring metal cap to receive the end of the umbrella stick, which cap is formed with overlapping ends held together bya rivet secured firmly in one lap and operating in a slot formedi in the other lap, substantially as described, whereby the same is adapted to enlarge its circumference to suit, the diameten 0f the stick over which it ispassed.

5. A clip for anu-mbrellacovcr consisting of a slotted or slit cap adapted to yield toadmit the end of the rib and to close about the same, and a' three lobed extension havingeyes formed in each lobe, adapted for attachment of the cover thereto at. the radial seams and at each side of the point of said covertothe edges thereof, substantially as describedand for the purpose set forth.
