UMBRELLA OR4 PARASOL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,391, dated June 7, 1887.

To all whom t may concern,.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. Armas, a citizen of the United States, residing in Reading, Pennsylvania, have invented certain lmprovements in Umbrellas and Parasols, of which the following is a speeitication.

My invention relates to that class of umbrellas in which the cover is detachable from y the frame, the objects of my invention being to provide for the proper confinement of the cover irrespective of slight ditl'erenees in the sizes of different covers, to make a neat finish at the upperv end of the umbrella or parasol, and to provide the cover with retainingclips, which can be readily applied to or removed from the tip ends ofthe ribs.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional view, partly in elevation, ot sufficient of the upper portion of an umbrella or parasol to illustrate my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional plan on the line l 2, Fig. l; Fig. 3, perspective views of the parts comprising the device for attaching the cover of the umbrella. Figs. 4 and 5, views showing thcdevice for connecting thecovcr to the tip ends of the ribs; and Fig. 6, a perspective view of the notch which carries the ribs, the parts comprising the notch being detached from cach other, and part of two of the ribs being also shown.

.A represents part of the stick of an umbreila or parasol, and B the notch, to which are hung the ribs D, this notch and the ribs being constructed in the peculiar manner described hereinafter.V

Secured to the stick, above the notch B, is a fel-rule, F, threaded exteriorly for the 'reception of an internally-tlneaded sleeve, G, the lower portion of which has a recess, a, for the` reception of the upper portion of the cover J of the umbrella or parasol. This-cover has the usual central opening for the passage of the stick and ferrule F,whieh opening is preferably surrounded by a strengthening cord or wire, and the cover is provided around its outer edge with clips M, whereby it is retained by the tip ends of the ribs D.

Owing to the provision of the recess c in the eontiningsleeve G, the upper end of the cover can be secured to the ferrule by a confining cord or band at any distance above the lower end of said ferrulc which maybe demanded by the size of the cover, the proper confinement of the cover to the frame being effected by screwing down the sleeve G, the V lower end of which bears upon the cover and depresses the same to its proper position at and near the ribs.

If desired, the cover maybe confined between the lower edge of the sleeve G and a nut, b, adapted to the threaded exterior of the ferrnle F and adjustable thereon, so as to properly confine thc cover, whatever may be the position assumed by the retainingsleeve G.

rlhe ferrule F, with its retainingsleeve, forms an attachment which can be readily applied to the stick ot an ordinary umbrella or parasol, the upper portion ot' the sleeve fitting snugly to the ferrule above the threaded por tion of the latter and covering the thread, so that the latter does not detract from the general neat appearance of the attachment.

In order to permit therremoval of any one of the ribs when it becomes broken or otherwise defective, I provide each rib at the upper end with laterally-projecting pivots f, preferably formed by the same dies that are used lfor ilattening the upper end of each rib.

The notch B has radial slots g for the reception of the4 reduced portions of the ribs, the pivot-heads being confined to the notch by a nut,`l1, adapted to the threaded stem of the notch.

In order to permit the insertion or removal of a rib, it is necessary to remove the nut, so that the pivotshead of the rib can be withdrawn from the notch or the pivot-head of a by sewing or otherwise. is effected, the enreo larged portion of the outer eye being intended for the passage oi the knob p on the tip of the rib, and the contracted portion of said eye receiving the reduced portion of the rib at the base ofthe tip, as shown in Fig. 4, when the cover is properly applied to the ribs.
