DETA-GHABLB UMBRELLA QQVBB.
No. 501,819. Patented Jul'y 18;;1-893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATILDA C. S. BROUN, OF BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA.
DETACHABLE UMBRELLA-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,819, dated July 18, 1893.
Application filed October 1, 1892- Serial No. 447,518- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATILDA O. S. BROUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley,Alameda county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Adjustable Umbrella-Covers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the'same.
My invention relates to a covering for parasols and umbrellas, and a means by which the covering may be detached from, and replaced upon the frame, so that a variety of coverings may be employed upon a single frame.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention,-Figure 1 is a vertical section of a parasol partly opened. Fig. 2, shows the part E provided with a projecting stud, and the part F with an angular slot into which the stud passes and clamps the two parts together in the manner of a bayonet joint, after the cloth has been inserted between the two. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the tips H and the ribs B. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of one of the tips.
The object of my-invention is to provide an easily detachable covering for parasols and umbrellas so that with a single frame a person may have as many diiferent covers as may be desired, it being especially applicable for parasols, of which ladies desire to have many different covers to go with different suits of clothes.
A is the handle of the parasol or umbrella having the usual radial ribs B, and the supporting arms or braces O which connect with the sliding sleeve D whereby the arms are spread or closed as desired. Upon the outer end of the stick is fixed an externally threaded sleeve E at a point sufficiently below the end of the stick to make a proper finish, the bottom of this screw-threaded sleeve being made cone or bell-shaped as shown at E. Exterior to this is a second sleeve F screwthreaded to -fit over the interior one and having a corresponding bell-shape F at the bottom. These two cones may be otherwise clamped or secured together in any desired manner.
brella i-s stitched in sectionsin the usual man ner, and at the apex is left ahole of sufficient size to slip over the inner cone E, after which the outer one F is placed over it and closed down so as to clamp the cloth firmly between the two. A notch is made in the outer cone or sleeve F, and a corresponding spring pin G fits into it when it has been pressed down to the proper point, the object of this being to retain the seams of the cloth in line with the spreader arms B of the parasol, and to lock the cones upon the handle. The ends of each of the seams of cloth have stitched to vthem the tips H which are of any ornamental style and finish. These tips are made with holes in them for the purpose of stitching the cloth on, and the inner ends are made tubular having a longitudinal diaphragm or partition extending radially part way across them as shownin thetransverse section. The object of .this is to fit it to the semicircular ribs B so as to prevent the tip from turning, and to keep it properly in position on the end of the rib. In applying. the tips they are 7 slipped upon the ends of the ribs with the diaphragm in the hollow of said ribs. At a point midway between the apex and the outer end, or at as many points as may be desired on the inner seams of the cloth, are fitted the spring catches I which are adapted to slip over the ribs and thus retain the seams exactly in line with them to present a symmetrical appearance.
As many covers having as many different colors or styles as may be desired, are thus made to fit a single frame, each cover having its tips stitched to it, and the spring'catches, and it is only necessary to unfasten the spring catches, slip the tips off the ends of the ribs and release the clamping sleeves to remove a covering. Another covering can be substituted for it by reversing the operation, and the user may thus have as many different parasol covers as desired with a single frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.- In a parasol or umbrella the interior and exterior cones between which the apex of the covering is clamped and the spring catch and notch whereby the seams of the covering are directed along the lines of the radial ribs, in combination with grooved ribs and removable hollow tips havinglongitudinal inwardly projecting diaphragms to take into the grooves of the ribs, substantially as herein described.
2. In a parasol or umbrella the combination with grooved ribs, of removable hollow tips having inwardly projecting longitudinal dia- IO phragrns to take into the grooves of said tips, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
MATILDA C. S. BROUN. Witnesses:
S. H. NOURSE, J. A. BAYLESS.
